What does everyone have planned?
I am trying to cut back. I want to plant a Kerr on dolgo and see if it gets a bigger size than B118. Maybe a Turning Point.
I might field graft a B118 to Connell Red.
There are a few seedlings to plant.

I think I have 10 or 11 crabs coming from NWC and St Lawrence. It’s an incurable disease. I don’t think these have helped hunting in the 10 years I’ve been planting.

No planned planting at Nassau Deluxe this Spring. I'm burning and I'll spray and mow whatever else needs done in preparation for my switch grass base as well as clover in a couple strips. I'll frost seed that in Spring of 2023. I'm also going to pick out spots for a few fruit trees, then spray those spots, prep for planting the next year as well. Slow and steady wins the race.

I also have a couple of deer crabs in pots in the garden from Midwest Deer Trees. I planted a few last fall and the other trees will go in a ‘no go area’ as far as fall planting.
I hope gophers didn’t hit those areas too hard last fall. Once the rain started, I left those areas alone.

The plan is 4 apple trees in MN. From Battle Lake Nursery. Connell Red, Chestnut, and 2 others.
In Iowa I will plant around 15-20 crabapple of different varieties.

I've got 5 wild apple plugs coming from the U of ID, that's it for new fruit tree plantings.
Got a few scions coming from Fedco, I swore I was done with new varieties but it's a sickness. I'll graft those scions and some from my trees to rootstocks where I had prior grafting failures. I'll do some topworking of wild trees and add some varieties to a couple Frankentrees. If the apple plugs are big enough, I may graft those right away too. If not, I'll let them grow a year or more.

I plant fruit trees for me more than for the deer. I do like having late holding trees to give the deer some high carb food when it's bitter cold.

This past fall I bought most of the seeds and herbicides I will need for 2022. (1700 lbs of seeds). I plan to plant at two times in 2022.....once in June prior to terminating my rye and planting warm season soil bullding crops.......and again in late August or early September at which time I will put down more Rye and brassica for the fall.
Still awaiting the roller/crimper I bought in September. Dunno what I will do if it does not get here. Also waiting on a new drill....but I am sure my current drill will work.....and I have a plan B to terminate the rye If I have to. Bought 5 gallons of Glyphosate 41 at old prices last fall. Nice not to worry about getting these things in Spring. Strange times.

I think I've got 95% of my seed secured at this time for the 2022 season. I've got at least a gallon of gly. Although that's only needed in my remote plots I can't get equipment to. Area isn't much for those. I don't plan on using gly in the field plot anymore. Just cut/till to terminate any crop from here on out.

They have a 1/2 Inch crab. I should topwork them to something more useful. A friend has Clair 9. That might be worth a try.

I have never shot a deer under an apple tree but had two small bucks under a tree two years ago on opening day. I do think the variety of apples and drop times keeps them on the property.

I might collect some red splendor crabapples that are still hanging on a few trees and plant them this spring. I might use these seedlings for grafting in future years, but I don't plan on any bench grafting this spring. I haven't ordered any rootstock yet and at this point on not planning on ordering any (but that has been known to change as winter wears on and grafting sounds more fun). I might topwork a few trees this spring though.

If I live long enough, I expect to shoot a buck in one of my orchards sooner or later.
