I have talked to a few guys that do it and say its a good time. If it sucks the scenery will be good.

Planted an Ely pear and a Redstone Canyon Gold apple from SLN today. I'm unimpressed with the size, caliper, and root structure of their trees. The pear was maybe 30" tall counting the roots and 3/8" caliper. The apple was a bit better caliper and probably 36-38" tall counting the roots. Both the pear and apple had a number of roots that were circling and would have ultimately "strangled" the trees eventually. I removed them far enough back to eliminate the circling issues. I don't know what kind of medium SLN is using to grow out their stock, but I'd guess it's a bunch of gravel and rocks with a little bit of dirt mixed in. I don't know why else young trees would be developing circling roots. I got 3 common pear rootstocks from SLN too. I put those in a pot and will likely graft them tomorrow if it's rainy. Those 3 had very nice roots. No circling. I'm guessing SLN is buying those in bulk from another grower. I wish Connor and SLN well, but I won't be buying from them again anytime soon. I will eat a bit of crow on this and state that the two trees I got from SLN grew very well this year. I did nothing other than plant and protect them. I was just researching Redstone Canyon Gold and apparently there's some thought out there that it is really NW Greening. I guess Connor sent some fruit and leaves to Cornell for DNA testing. If it is, I'll be less than excited. Nothing wrong with NW Greening, but if I wanted another one I would have just grafted my own.

If true, someone did some fancy marketing. I am not accusing SLN.

One would think an "apple guy" would look at the fruit, recognize it's growing in a challenging winter environment and ID it as NW Greening. I'd never seen the fruit until yesterday. They look identical to my NW Greening fruit. Time will tell
