I figured this is a good year to put a big garden in. I plowed about 1/3 of an acre. Hopefully will be planting this weekend.

I have 90% of the garden in. We have a bit of room left as we planted less squash. We might plant more beets in a week or so. Twelve tomato plants are in and I planted some decades old tomato seed in the garden. My Dad used to plant that seed in the garden up north and most years got ripe tomatoes. They were a small juicey tomato with higher acid. I always liked them.

I have a crazy plan. Sweet corn, peas, beans, potatoes, sunflowers, and overseed it all with radishes. This will be in my field and not protected from deer. I have a special plan for the peas and beans.

The potato bugs moved in so I dug all 4 hills. I am considering tilling this corner of the garden and adding some turnip and radish seed.

Sevin takes care of potato beetles pretty quickly.
My wife never used any kind of insecticides in the garden at her old place. She tried not to here for the first few years, but when all of our brassicas got invaded by various critters I told her to dust the plants with Sevin in the morning when they are dewy. Now she asks me where the Sevin is every year.

When I'm done picking vegetables in a section of my garden I dig it up and plant whatever leftover food plot seed I have on hand. Typically a mix of some oats, peas, brassicas and buckwheat. It should be good for the soil to have a cover crop and the wildlife gets a little extra food

We had our first batch of beet greens this week. Probably have another batch of greens next week along with our first bulb beets. I like them boiled and sliced with salt, butter, and a little apple cider vinegar.

I picked my first batch of peas and beans. Been steaming them in hot honey and dust them with pecorino Romano. They are awesome.
