I’ve decided to put in five crabapple trees next Spring. The mini-orchard is on the South side of my cattail creek on some high ground with row crops to the South. Someday, this section of row crops will be turned into a foodplot with screens around it. But that’s a project for future years. Based on advice from Sandbur, I’ll try to get the following five trees this Spring. Grafted Dolgo Chestnut Big Dog Trail man And one more TBD. Maybe a Red Splendor for the pheasants. I paced 10 steps from the edge of the bean field and mowed a strip. Then I paced 8 steps between planting spots, big long daddy paces, and put marker flags in a row. They are about 25’ apart. Soon, I’ll spray the planting spots with a mixture of glyphosate and 2,4-d. Next Spring I’ll plant and do the mat/mulch/cage thing then drag buckets of water out to them once or twice a week. Maybe I’ll dig the holes yet this fall. Here it is. It doesn’t look like much right now, but I’ve got plans. One step at a time.

Some of my fruit trees are about ten paces from the crop land. So far I have had no problems with herbicide drift but I worry about it. My renter is very careful.

I would keep working on them.

I think your choice of apples sounds pretty good. Are you planting any in your yard?

I think your choice of apples sounds pretty good. Are you planting any in your yard? We've got enough apples in the yard already. But, If I did, it'd probably be a Chestnut Crab in the same vicinity of the gnarly old homestead apple trees.

I thought I'd save time and pre-dig holes one year. I only did them the week before planting. It froze hard the night before planting and I couldn't use any of the frozen soil I dug out. Won't make that mistake ever again. Just an fyi.

Yup, I'd pass on the holes but all the other protection/matting/supplies could be staged.

I started with 5 apple trees my first year. I'm over 70 now and not half as crazy as some on here. Good luck.
There might be an AA (Appleholics Anonymous) meeting near Pequot Lakes...Look for the dot.
