I was buying preference points for a black hills elk tag for a couple years and then forgot. I need to get back on that. In SD a resident can simply accumulate points for $5/year. Last I heard it was 8 years to draw an elk tag. I'm collecting points for mule deer and elk in Wyoming and Colorado. Are you applying or do you use a service? I'm working on putting a bow mule deer hunt in SD for 2017. im getting tired of the points systems, what a racket. Canada is looking better all the time. sorry, the quote was suppose to be for Coop, new site is a little different. Freeborn - I recommend 2x checking with your area contact on the SD Mulie hunt. I know EHD was really bad in some West River units.

Montana deadline is March 15. We always apply for a tough draw area (river breaks) as we build up preference points but we are guaranteed a general big game combo tag. This tag is good for elk either sex and mulie for bow and rifle. There are a lot of good areas out there that are truck accessible that have very high success rates. I feel like we could tag out every year with rifle, bow is definitely more challenging. My buddy saves his mulie tag for better areas further east on blm land. He shoots a respectable deer every year. Only downside is the cost of tag, 1000$

My old man and I are planning on bow hunting in CO again for elk this year. Limited entry but should draw with the one point we do have.

We always apply for wy and nm elk. We are planning hunting co for mule deer this fall since we have 10 points we want to cash them and go back every few years instead of waiting this long. However this winter the west is having is making that tricky.
Fall back might be a SD west river tag. Hard to find mature animals in SD unless you have connection in my experience.

Coop (or anyone else reading this), do you use any of the services like Gohunt? I know there are a couple others out there. I need to figure out places to start applying. We do not use any services to apply however there are some good websites which help show the odds etc....I can send some tomorrow when on computer.

This is one my of my favorite pics. It's my dad standing on a mountain in Colorado back in 2014. Yes he does have a crossbow. Yes, he did get the proper permit to use a crossbow in CO. He has stage four cancer and is one tough dude.

I just need to continue to buy points for future hunts.

Those states are excellent Elk states and if you draw it would be a big win. I have never applied to several states at once but I might be missing a good approach. I suppose chance are slim that you could draw more than one state.

Last year I bought an NM landowner tag a week before I got drawn in AZ. The seasons were offset just enough to make it work. I had 7 AZ preference points & hadn't expected to get drawn for another 6-7 years. I really love bow hunting elk during the rut!!! It's the hunting highlight of my life. I hope to have the ability & opportunity to do it for years to come.
