Is that your typical approach? Those states are excellent Elk states and if you draw it would be a big win. I have never applied to several states at once but I might be missing a good approach. I suppose chance are slim that you could draw more than one state. I usually apply for tags in AZ, NM, NV, & UT all long shots. I've bought a couple unit wide, archery tags in NM. Last year I bought an NM landowner tag a week before I got drawn in AZ. The seasons were offset just enough to make it work. I had 7 AZ preference points & hadn't expected to get drawn for another 6-7 years. I really love bow hunting elk during the rut!!! It's the hunting highlight of my life. I hope to have the ability & opportunity to do it for years to come. COOP, where are you from, I'm originally from AL and spent plenty of time over in Fillmore and Olmstead Counties. My dads uncle had a farm in Lanesboro. I loved to go there as a kid and listen to my great Uncle talk about farming with horses. In his barn he had all his bridles hanging on the wall. He was born in 1900 and was full of stories. Great area over there in the Bluff country. How did your NM hunt go? I have never purchased a land owner tag but would if it wasn't insane.

I live in the Twin Cities, grew up in the Twin Cities. Look forward to moving out of the city once my kids graduate.
Discovered SE MN 16 years ago. My buddy & I bought a plat map & knocked on doors near White Water State Park for an entire winter. While introducing ourselves to a couple in Houston County, we were referred to a guy in the Winnebago Valley South of Caledonia. It was one of those deals where if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.... The fella was a nice enough guy, with awesome ground, but he was unwilling to honor any of the deals he made with us. I ended up using his land to access public far more frequently than I hunted on his. It was inspiration to buy my own place.
NM 2016 was fantastic. I went to a place I've hunted before which is an advantage. The full moon was right in the middle of the hunt which really made it tough. The weather was hot & dry making it even tougher. Typically got 60 minutes in the morning & 45 minutes at night. I like it when they party all day! Hunted an area where you have to walk in 4-5 miles so ended up spending a lot of time on the Binos or in a hamock.

I've lived in the TC sense I was out of college in 1985, great place to find quality work but I'm looking forward to moving out of the city. I've Elk hunted (Bow) down by Durango Colorado which is close to NM but not NM. It's dry and hot there also. I did not see near the Elk sign in that area as I see in Wyoming or Northern Colorado but they do shoot some very big animals in that area. I would of had a decent bull in Durango if I had a rifle but I could not close the deal.

Less than a week remaining for New Mexico and Nevada applications. Happy to help anyone pick a spot... Send me a PM. I haven't spent much time outside the last couple months, relative to most months anyway. I'm stir crazy!!! Spent a lot of time daydreaming about September in mountains with a bow in my hands.

I may apply for Colorado unit 76. It depends on my Dad's health and who else might be available to help. I'm a point short of having high odds f drawing. But there is a chance I could get a tag.
I have until April 4th to make a decision.
After reading this thread, it makes me want to explore my options in other states.

I put in for Colorado unit 76. My odds are low based on last year stats but my fingers are crossed.
I won't know until June.
