Time for a 2024 thread. Thirty plus acres of alfalfa went in on my place yesterday. I hope we get some more rain.
My renter said just straight alfalfa. No oats or peas and oats.

I got a bunch of collard seed and some Fixation clover delivered this week. I'm thinking about a spring planting of collards on my creek plot and a strip at the neighbor's. The neighbor and I are trying to figure out what to do with his larger plot yet.
The clover will go down in August, unless it's another drought year anyway

22 acres of alfalfa, 2nd year, 2 cuttings. Maybe a rye or turnip patch if I get a little rambunctious and buy a 3 point tiller.

I’m planting the usual corn, bean, brassica and clover mix behind my house this year, but no other plots anywhere else.
I’ll have farmer planted alfalfa, so hopefully that will give me some decent hunting without having to spend all my free time on plots.
More time for fishing!

Spread a bushel of winter rye on the new plot this morning. 48 degrees and I was in a t-shirt. If felt great. Of course the black flies started showing up until the wind started.

I’m hitting the plots pretty hard in 24. The mild winter will have an impact on the deer (better racks, more fawns). So I’m gonna increase the acres . My special project is 3 acres of soybeans and another acre of fall plot to try to lure in the big buck ! I think he will be special if he’s alive … (which I’ve heard he is) Can’t wait !

Has anyone ever tried a late planting of soybeans so the beans will be in the green stage come bow opener? Or at least a strip of late planted? Knowing full well they may not fully develop?

I did it once and it was getting hit hard until we had a hard frost the night before bow opener! If you get lucky and have a warm September, it could work out really well though

I'd say that buck was special last year! He will be world class this fall if he is still alive. Hopefully he bred a lot of does last year because he has some unbelievable genetics.
