I'm going to pick up my order from NCR tomorrow a.m. I'll get some planted on Friday and Saturday, then finish up what I can next week. I'll probably keep a bunch in the blocks for as long as I need to so I can get them planted in the low ground. I'm sure those areas are still pretty frozen

Is next week too early for apple trees, this would be bare root.

Is next week too early for apple trees, this would be bare root. If you can dig the hole and they're still dormant then you should be fine.

Just got home with my and Bob's trees from NCR. They look good
Edit - good luck this weekend SD...I hit plenty of frost in wooded areas. Sunny spots were pretty much frost free for 5-6" at least.

Do they pull out of the cartons pretty easy stu? Thinking of maybe keeping a few flats so I don't have to worry about getting them in so quickly.

I have had some frozen blocks before where they didn't pull out easy, I had to let those thaw a couple days as I recall. Usually they are either in the blocks or not when you pick them up. When I order I always tell them I want them in the blocks if at all possible. The deposit is a bit of an expense, but no big deal in the grand scheme of things.

One more question. What's the deposit for them?

One more question. What's the deposit for them? $5.50 per block, you get it back when your return them.

What are the non-conifer trees? They're all conifers. Some towards the back right that are taller and a bit yellow are Scotch pine - size 20

If you water the blocks, then leave them out overnight when it gets to 24 degrees...the plugs are hard to get out of the blocks....because they're frozen...

I planted around 175 various plugs today. 65 of them were 10s and 20s for screening (hopefully), so that was shovel work. The rest was pretty low key planting, covering lots of ground with low density plantings along trails. Trying to create/reinforce travel corridors with the Norway spruce 6s. I'll probably plant another 100-200 tomorrow, then sit on my ass in the sun and drink copious amounts of beer I'll get the rest of them planted early next week.

I was pleased with the handling Itasca did with my trees. I wasn't hip on not getting all of my order in trays, but it was ok. They did a nice job of making sure all the trees were well watered when I got them. Usually, when i got trees under the old regime, they were very dry and had to be soaked before i could plant. The roots were a tad underdeveloped, but I think they'll be ok.
