I spent most of this past Saturday digging a pond in an under utilized spot on my farm. The goal was to make it a more desirable spot to hunt and to slow down some the erosion that tore up the bluffs last summer. I used an S185 bobcat which would have been completely useless if I hadn't installed rubber tracks. I was amazed with the improved performance of the tracks in the mud. About 1/2 way thru the project the tracks stretched and started to slip... It diminished the performance a bit but I still got the job done.
I built the pond by creating an impoundment near the head of a valley. I had high hopes of making it so a truck could drive over the impoundment but it turned into a big ramp. I tried to set it up with a low spot on the North end to serve as a spillway.
I'll post a few more pics as nature has its way with my project. Would love to hear how others done wildlife ponds.

Sweet! How well do you think it will hold water at the depth you went down? I'm going to be looking into improving one over the summer. Gotta find a toy to do the trick first though

Did you rent the bobcat? If so did you consider a dozer?

I own a small landscaping business so it was kind of "free". I would have loved to done it with a dozer!! I'm guessing it will hold 24" to 36" of water. I did a really bad job photographing the whole project but the impoundment in particular. It rained the last two days so unless I rent a backhoe, it is what it is. Hope it works!

If it holds water you're going to have an awesome social gathering spot for the deer. Give it time before hunting near it so the deer get comfortable coming every night. I dug a waterhole that has a trench leading to it for runoff and it stays full all summer. My waterhole was the single best improvement I did on my place, they are a major attraction.

I think it's gonna hold water. The next test will be how it holds up to a flooding rain.

Thanks for asking. I don't have a pic handy but I'll take one next time I'm there. It's full & the spillway is working as planned.
