Ordered a jug as my old stuff apparently lost it's ability to kill grasses last year. I was reading the label online and all I can find about an early spraying is that grasses need to be actively growing. Since the grasses here are indeed now growing, I'm thinking I can hit them with some cleth in the next week or so? I think I'll plan on hitting plots twice this year, late April/early May and early July (as long as we're not in a drought).

I'd say your good to go. I've found that in my canary grass I don't really get a complete kill but set it back enough my trees can grow.

^^^I've found the same thing with a thick stand of RCG. On isolated "patches" I think cleth can have better control. Most of what I'm dealing with is upland grasses in clover and wildflower plots. I do have spots where RCG is trying to get started, I hope to prevent that.

i came across a story about RCG somewhere recently where they talked about "scraping" to get rid of canary grass. They didn't completely expand on the idea, but it sounded like they took some heavy equipment and just dug out the entire patch, put it on a pile, and turned the spot into a shallow pond.
If only I had $10,000 fun money to hire an excavator.

I think using good sized hybrid poplars (I'd go with rooted cuttings) to shade RCG out may be a cost effective (and low labor input) method to deal with the stuff.

Cleth is more effective when you have back to back to back days in the mid 70's or higher for day time temps.
And that sucks, I am heading your way today, and have a gallon jug for $39.50.

^^^that does suck. I didn't even ask you as I figured you were sick of small/foodplot orders.
The problem with having multiple days in the 70s is that the grasses will be much larger than "ideal" by the time we could expect those temps.

I'm holding off to spray my cleth until early May. Thankfully, this go around I'm not fighting any RCG.

I just got tired of guys trying to order 2lbs of clover and have me package it and ship it when I only make .50 on the deal. If guys want to pick up 2lbs no problem. The Cleth or any chemical works best when weeds are actively growing. And that usually takes warm temps. Poor results usually come with cooler temps. So just be aware of mixed results when spraying early.

I have not used it for a number of years, but thought it did set the RCG back. That was for younger plants trying to establish.

I have a pretty good inventory of seeds from last year.....and I'll be getting some beans from Art.....If I get down to his MDHA chapter for their Spring fling. Still....sometime early this summer.....I gotta make a road trip over to MO's place and buy some cloth and some kinda seeds and such from him. It would be fun to buy a few beers maybe a little lunch and learn more about his operations. Then too....there is always the school board elections to plan (WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU thINKING to run for school board??? - you don't need that!)
