Are you talking bench grafts to rootstock or top working existing trees? With bench grafts ants I put them in a tub in a dark cool room for a couple weeks. Then when I bring them outside it’s out of direct sun for a few more weeks. These are bench grafts I did this weekend. Right now I have them all in an unheated shed at about 45 degrees. I have them in two large pots with a white kitchen bag over them. Should I put them in a darker spot? How cool do you keep yours for the first two weeks? I always kept mine in a dark room for a couple weeks. You want that graft union to callous over before it pushes top growth. Mine room ranged from 40-55 and I never had a problem. I’ve read where the optimum temperature range for apple grafts is 55-65 but, I never had a problem. The top working grafts are usually low 40s or even 30s so I think you’ll be fine. Wait at least 2 weeks though before you bring them out.

FB, maybe put a dark trash bag over them just to block light.

FB, maybe put a dark trash bag over them just to block light. That's what I was thinking. I'm a little concerned about temps, we'll have highs in the low 60's in the next week with evening temps in the 40's. The concrete in that shed keeps it cooler at ground level so hopefully it won't cause me any problems.

I used to put one of those remote thermometers in the room I kept them in so i knew the lows and highs.

Once your grafts take how long do you wait to remove the rubber bands and paraffin tape? I’d wait until June or so. Take one off and see if it looks healed up well. You’ll be able to tell. If there’s an area that hasn’t healed well at that point just wrap the paraffin tape to keep the water out. Bands shouldn’t be needed then.

A possible fix for some vole/nice damage.

FB, maybe put a dark trash bag over them just to block light. Well, I looked under the black bag for the first time today and saw a few buds showing green. I'll look further this weekend when I hit two weeks. Looks like were going to be cool for the next week, high of 44 this Saturday and then temps in the mid 50's next week. How should I assess there progress, should I progress to a white bag before I take the bag off completely. The grafts are still in my unheated shed so they should be safe from any cold temps this Saturday. Keeping my fingers crossed.

If the buds are swelling that’s a great sign. I’d keep plastic over them to keep the moisture in. It won’t matter much if you keep the black or switch to white. What do the trees outside look like? Are they leafing out? I’d wait until they’re fully leafed out before moving outside. Will you be planting these or growing in bags/pots for this year?

Things will change quickly in the next week or two. I have not figured out where I'm going to plant them. How big of pots do I need, 2-3-5 gallon? I could put them in pots and then move them to the farm in the fall for planting. I have a spot where I can set the pots and have my irrigation system water them.

At home I use the 3 gallon rootrapper bags on the smaller grafts and the 5 gallon on the larger. It depends on how far along the roots are on the rootstock.

Do you usually use potting soil or a different mix?

The suggest rot down but, hold in the moisture and help reduce the amount of promix needed.

I took a look at my grafts and most have budded out and a couple are producing leaves. I'm a little concerned as they look more yellow than green. I think they need a little more light so I took the black bags off them. I'll check them daily to see how their doing. I have them in my unheated shed with indirect light. It's been 3 weeks already sense I grafted them.
