I was at my place Saturday, the weather was bad. High of around 40 with sleet and winds from 10-20 out of the NE. Not a good day to be working but I killed allot of tent Caterpillar. While I was there I checked several crabs I top-worked. I'n not sure if you can see the green on this golden hornet as it was just starting to show but you can see the buds are swelled. I checked Shafer, Kerr and Golden Hornet and it looks like they are taking. I'm thinking the cold is slowing things down but its probably better than dry heat.

Yesterday, I checked my topworks and it does not look very good. Noran might make it and also maybe a winter wildlife. Maybe it is my storage of the scion, maybe the frosts. I had better luck with those I covered during the cold nights. I hope Noran has some CAR resistance, as I have a hotspot.

Art, I saw you top worked larger trees. All of mine are 5th leaf Red Splendor Crabs that were tubed. I think I dogged the frost as the grafts are in the tubes. Next time I'm at my place I'll check all of my grafts. One thing that I like about these crabs is they are very hardy and tremendous growers. I'm thinking they are perfect for top work. It might be a good idea to buy a bunch of seedlings, plant them and then top work the best growers.
I did notice some frost damage particularly in my low spots. All of this rain is good for trees and plants but I do wish it was a little warmer.

Many of my smaller crabs were top worked a few years ago.

Here's a good grafting video of a man that grafts for Fedco. He's got a Mainer accent.

The more you graft the more successful you'll get but, you'll also understand that is ok if the grafts fail. The tree will recover and you can try again next year or do bud grafts later in the year. Apple trees are amazing in how much stress they take and their will to recover and heal.

One thing I wanted to drop on here....
I have always sprayed my young grafts with Sevin. This year I had some leftover of my Captan/Imadin mix that I dumped into a 1 gal sprayer and brought home to spray my nursery. Bad idea. I fried 5 of the 7 enterprise that I planted in the nursery with the mix. Moral of the story......DONT SPRAY YOUNG TREES WITH THIS MIX. All other trees were fine, just these couple enterprise.

When do you guys cut off the grafting tape? these were grafted on red splendor crabapple rootstock and most are growing really well with around a foot of new growth. I'm a little worried I'll cut the tape too early and the tree will snap off at the graft.

All my grafts are having their tap cut tonight. I grafted mine on 05/15 (bench graft) all my field grafts have already had their tape/bands removed.

For you guys who graft, do you cover your grafts with a white or dark bag to slow the growth down? How much indirect light do you allow to the new grafts?
I got my grafts done and got my fingers crossed for a good year.

With bench grafts ants I put them in a tub in a dark cool room for a couple weeks. Then when I bring them outside it’s out of direct sun for a few more weeks.

These are bench grafts I did this weekend. Right now I have them all in an unheated shed at about 45 degrees. I have them in two large pots with a white kitchen bag over them. Should I put them in a darker spot? How cool do you keep yours for the first two weeks?
