If I understand what Kroll said, and I only heard part of it.....somehow we need a method of limiting spread in the immediate area and need to concentrate on flare ups outside of that area. My interpretation might be wrong.
I was thinking, we will probably need to call this endemic. Then any new cases mroe than 100 miles away could be treated in a different way than the endemic area.
I ahve also heard of testing the positive animals to see if they are just one family group. If so, control might be limited to a smaller area.....

Coop did you make it to the meeting in Chatfield? No. I'm disappointed that I missed it. I'm on an outdoor broomball team and the league admin predicted Wednesday 2-8 & Thursday 2-9 would be the end of our outdoor ice season. As a result, they hosted year end play-offs/tournament the last couple days.... I couldn't leave my team hanging.

It's news to me that St. Louis county has a case too. That's interesting given there are practically no deer up there aside from the rail yard in Duluth. How do you eradicate a disease from a wild animal that is hardly even present on the landscape?

I think we forget the deer and shoot the DNR. $17.6M in revenue is nothing to this state and I have some serious doubts it produces much for jobs. "According to documents obtained from Animal Health and DNR, 91 deer escaped confinement last year and 16 were never found. In 2015, 30 animals escaped and 10 were not found. In 2011, 107 escapes led to 29 lost deer and elk." How hard is it to keep deer in a pen?

At $38,000 per farm of economic activity the farms appear to be expensive hobbies. Pretty sure "economic activity" also means its not the gross revenues of the farms, but the $ they spend on vets, feed, etc. I doubt more than a handful are even close to making a living doing this.
I found this amusing. Could be easy to read this the wrong way, but it looks like Lou doesn't think the DNR should be close with it's stakeholders.

How do you eradicate a disease from a wild animal that is hardly even present on the landscape? I have friends and family that hunt/live in various parts of St Louis county. They have some of the worse hot and cold spots I have heard of. Last year there were areas you could drive 5 miles and see 100 deer an evening and areas you could drive 20 miles and see 5. Some of the areas with the large pockets of deer are near Meadowlands/Toivola, Palo/Makinen, Cherry/Iron Junction.

I have no idea if the owner does a daily patrol of his fencing...but knowing how things work around here...I'd be really surprised if he does.

I thought that stakeholder/closeness comment was funny too. First thought that popped into my mind was, "Your stakeholders think you're a corrupt asshole."

I "read" that as well. I'm sure you were kidding when you said you found it amusing, because frankly there is nothing funny about it at all given the current situation of deer hunting in MN. That would piss me off to no end and someone at the Legislature in St Paul would be getting an earful about that comment and getting asked what the fuck that is supposed to mean considering Lou's stakeholders are the ones who provide the license funding and control the deer herd so he can keep his arrogant ass behind that desk in St Paul. Your legislators need to be put on notice and told in no uncertain terms, that they will do something about these DNR assholes and their rhetoric, or you will vote someone in during the next election cycle that will do something about them.
^^^Looks like I was typing when SD posted.......

Yep, definitely meant amusing in a sarcastic way. Reminded me why I didn't want to spend any more time trying to work with the DNR regarding deer management after being fairly involved for close to 1.5 years. I feel bad for the vast majority of hunters who have their hunting impacted by the DNR but it is further down the list on what impacts hunting for me and not a good place for me to spend my time and energy.

The board of health, that oversees the deer and elk farmers, is made up of 3 livestock personal, and 2 vets. Sounds like having the fox watching the chickens.
