I've heard of them. There was a discussion on them last year on the other forum. Some guys don't mind not knowing rootstocks and are happy with their trees. From what I can determine, their crabs appear to be much like Morse Nursery's...likely wild trees that they have "trademarked" names of so they can be the only seller. Their other trees with known names would be just like buying them from some other nursery...except you may be able to find out rootstock from other nurseries. I contacted Northern Whitetail Crabs specifically asking what rootstocks they used and they wouldn't tell me. They did tell me that the rootstocks are "northern hardy". If that's the case, just tell me WTF they are...maybe I'd buy a tree then

I agree with Stu. If they can't or won't tell you what rootstock you're getting then I'd stay away. There's plenty of other northern nurseries that will provide great trees. Check out St Lawrence and Fedco too.

I was just wondering. All my trees have come from Cummings, Woodstock, and St Lawrence. Just thinking how many and what type I want to plant next year. I'm thinking 15-20 more for the spring. Just looking for different varieties. Here are the 15 trees I have held so far from Cummings, but it will probably change once St. Lawrence comes out with the 2018 offering.
Item Price Quantity Total Campfield (Apple) B.118 grade #1 $27.75 $27.75 Empire (Apple) B.118 grade #3 $23.75 $23.75 Galarina (Apple) B.118 grade #2 $29.00 $58.00 Honeycrisp (Apple) B.118 grade #1 $27.75 $83.25 Northern Spy (Apple) B.118 grade #1 $27.75 $55.50 Redfield (Apple) B.118 grade #1 $27.75 $27.75 Virginia Crab (Hewe's) (Apple) B.118 grade #1 $27.75 $55.50 Wickson Crab (Apple) B.118 grade #1 $27.75 $27.75 Wolf River (Apple) B.118 grade #1

I picked them for their cold hardiness and my camp is in Redfield.

I always wonder if northern hardy means hardy somewhere north of the Mason Dixon line to some of these companies!
Heck, I even live in southern Minnesota.

That'd eliminate all the clonal rootstock choices then. Pretty much leaves Dolgo, ranetka, and baccata. I truly doubt they're using any of those.

I didn't know rootstock had a bearing on cold hardiness. They are on B.118. Kind of false advertising if the entire tree can't handle -50.

How'd you find out they were on b118? I've generally seen b118 rated to zone 3a with it being considered "iffy" in 2b. -50 is the border between 2a and 1b. Also, if they're saying spur Red Delicious and Sheepnose are hardy to -50 they're full of shit.
I'm not saying don't buy trees from NWC, I'm saying I personally find the information they provide is insufficient or (more likely) misleading.

Yeah if they wouldn't tell me the rootstock I would walk away quickly. Secondly, I hear you on morse, that place is in Michigan even and I do NOT trust them.

How could I forget? I'll never understand why he didn't just come clean on being Charles Morse (or Charlie's kid, or his business manager, or whatever). Talk about guerrilla marketing and misleading information

Yeah it was fun watching you guys call him out but, he'd never admit to bring Charlie.
