I can't quite tell, but do you have a few without cages? If not, I would let some out to see if your deer will eat the plants. You may find they won't eat yours and you can go big next year.

They are all in cages. But literally a deer/rabbit could eat the vines at will. The majority of them are just old tomato cages of my grandmas.

I never saw much problems with vines getting eaten. The fruit is what I had to battle with.

Very cool! I'm excited to see how your pumpkin plot turns out. Mine that are getting watered are doing well. The others not so well.

Thanks for the heads up, boys. Once they get a bit larger, maybe I will remove the cages until I see a blossom and put the cages on that? I've had this seed for like 5 years, and finally remembered I had it when my mom asked if I could plant some pumpkins so that my 1 y.o. niece could try to carve her first pumpkin and thought it would be fun to do down at my grandma's!

I will have 11-12 "mounds" when all is said and done. Can I expect maybe 3-4 pumpkins per mound(2 plants per mound, except one that has 3)? One of the varieties is just those little mini pumpkins.

I'd uncage some now. I would want to figure out if they're going to eat the plant at any time. Like I mentioned earlier, if you find they are the rare ones that won't eat a pumpkin plant, you can go wild next year and direct seed them. Hell, that's got me thinkin now... (beware) I've got notions of expanding my food plots after this year. I want to push them further to the east (or towards the center of the property). But how to do it is the question. Only heavy equipment I'd have is the rental skid steer. But, to make that process easier, I could clear the expansion areas by hand and chainsaw, treat the stumps with granular salt to kill them, and plant pumpkins and clover in them for a couple years to let the brace roots rot a little. Then come back and blast those stumps out with the skid steer. None of the trees are large enough they couldn't be cut up into manageable pieces and moved easily enough. If I could win a quarter acre per winter, I'd be thrilled.

July 21st update, cages were off these ones for 2-3 days at the time of the picture. Was there today and they still haven't been touched and the vines are really taking off. This rain should only help things.

Looking great! I have a bunch planted at the moment and the deer aren't touching the vines. Of course most of them are barely growing because it's been hot and dry, but non the less the deer have had a chance at them and they aren't biting.

I've given them a sprinkle of urea or ams every time I'm there and we're expecting rain!

Thats not looking that good. We have about 45 days left on punkins(or a bit more). There should be some bowling balls by now on some of them. I dont even see a ping pong ball.
Hate to say it, but those arent gonna do much of anything at this stage of the game.

I wish I had pics(maybe I do), when we came home from July 4th from up north years ago when we grew them at home, the entire garden was a huge canopy of leaves.

I delayed my plantings because I didn't want them to rot? Maybe I waited too long? There were a couple of softball sized ones on there as of yesterday on the longer day maturity ones. I planned them out to become mature mid September figuring with frost?
