What the heck, maybe this place will stick around for awhile. Here's a couple pics I just snapped of the crab I've been calling LP VFW, after some digging and posts from others on H-T I believe it to be a Shafer crabapple.

Funny, that was one of the places I got some info on Shafer from I believe Art has "discovered" a Trail crab south of here a ways, and the tree growing near me is a Shafer (or Shafer Trail as that site calls them)

Looks great and is holding its fruit well into winter. I hope its a shafer as I have Shafer Scion from Grin I plan on grafting to Ranetka Rootstock.

Off topic but wanted to let you know Jerry...I did not purchase the Bank's blind. Although I believe, as a portable ice fishing shack for pond use, it would be stellar......Back to the crabapple discussion

Art is on the QHMG facebook page, so he should see the link to this place at some point.

I think the tree I found on a farm is a Shafer. I need to stop and see if any apples are left.
Speaking of Trail, about 10 years ago I called Bergeson Nursery in Fertile, Mn and was talking to the elder Mr. Bergeson about crab apple trees. He said he had a big old Trail crab on the farm or nursery grounds. He called it very hardy for our parts of the state. It would have been great to spend a few horus visiting with him. Bergeson nursery also has listed Breakey as a good apple for northern Mn. Some call it Breaky.

From all the reading I did, Shafer should be ripening in early September...Trail in early August. edit...that's wrong. I meant to say that Rescue ripens in early August.
