Iowa has an incredible buck to doe ratio, at least in the area I am hunting. From observation and trail cam pics it looks to be 2-1 maybe close to even, if you add in button bucks.
This is why daytime movement, rutting, responding to calls is much better in Iowa, compared to say MN.
The bucks feel they have to move to "get there before he does". Age structure is obviously much better, fights are common, which will lead to broken up racks/scars.
Even with the higher buck numbers, harvesting one with the bow is never a slam dunk. One problem is hunting the rut, the bucks rarely walk, most of the nice bucks I have seen are trotting, or chasing. We will see what happens. It is a nice change of pace from MN...
(Although MN looks much better this year for buck quality)

My buddy went to IA for the first time a couple years ago, and he doesnt even bother to hunt much in MN any more. I think he averaged 25 deer a day seen. Walking around all hours. No care in the world. Acting like a normal deer should.
Thats on public land too.
Sickening how artifically retarded MN deer are in general.

BLB--you can't complain about MN this year, because your son shot a dandy...LOL It is two worlds apart

Agreed Simple changes and MN could be a better experience for many. Why would the DNR want us to have a good experience???

Just got in the stand at 1:00 today. Saw two big bucks while driving to the farm, so I figured rut was going to be pretty good.
Slow until 4 then really good. I saw the biggest buck I've ever seen while in stand. Big big 10. I also saw a 6 pointer that is incredibly massive/thick tall.. strange buck.
I'll try it again tomorrow.

Put the tag on a 140 inch 10 this morning. He came by a really good rut stand (need a E wind). This was the 4th buck that came by within 25 yards. One was equally nice, possibly younger.
I think is a 4 year old. Made an 18 yard shot, he crashed in a ravine-75 yds away. There are bigger, but I could not pass...
I'll try to post pics yet today.
Fun time, good rutting activity.

Congrats - that didn't take very long. How many more days did you have to hunt?
