Here is the view from the stand I sat in taking the buck in the morning. The stand is set up for east winds, pasture behind me, and three trails meet on edge of the timber/cedars.... so it ends up behing a nice rut stand. Bucks scent check the cover, and come right by. There is a large community scrape right by the stand. Last years camera pics showed various shooters-going by during daylight almost every day from Oct 28-November 23. It was very active, and gave me confidence to do an all day sit here, although it only took a couple hours.

Congrats - that didn't take very long. How many more days did you have to hunt? All week if necessary Doe tag left. You got a week more to hunt southern IA, just as the rut is starting? I would want my buck tag in my pocket yet. But that's just me.

Mo--well yeah but I might not fill that tag either. This 140 inch 10 pointer was on the list, as we think it was 4 years old, and didn't jump a lot from last year. It would be my 3rd best buck ever, I have a tough time passing a buck that size--even in Iowa.
We have boys to hunt yet, and overall we had some nice bucks on camera, but the biggest being 155-160. You never know what comes in during the rut, I see your point, but I also remember last year when I passed 15+ bucks during the shotgun season and ended up not filling the tag.
We have quite a few management bucks as well, and I would have taken one of those as well. It is different management that is for sure.
*the shot to me is the key as well, this was an 18 yard shot broadside, no idea I was there. If the buck is 35 yards, and skittish, I probably pass.

I'm envious of how you guys have as much time off as you do. I only took off two days for whitetail this year. Owning out of state land in particular would require much more time then in state time.
I'm headed back up tonight with my buddy, hopefully he can close the deal.

I don't measure men by the filling of their tag, or not filling of their tag. Your happy, its all good. For me, Its southern IA, the rut just started, you can kill a buck anytime in your area. I wait 2 more weeks to see what pops out, kill him in the next 2 weeks or 2 months. Or eat tag soup. I do not want to sit in a stand doe hunting during the rut. It would kill me if a once in a life time comes by in shooting range and I can't shoot. But, thats just me.

I am not doe hunting I came back to MN. I am going to go back down later to fill the doe tag. I see your point, he may have walked by later in the week, and who knows what comes by in the meantime...but yeah I guess I am pretty happy with taking him. Now next year, I might do the late Muzzy season (leave 3 acres of corn) I might be more "picky" who knows?
My schedule is still busy, I came back work piled up on my desk, I don't think I could take two weeks off, one week maybe. Plus I have two boys in sports in high school/college.
Hoping my oldest boy (Andrew) can score on a buck during the shotgun season down in Iowa, more fun to see them get the big ones!

I have it lucky, but created that luck, with being able to take off almost 2 months straight if I want. If I was still building a business, I probably wouldn't even be hunting at all.

I did do a west hunt this year so I would have to add a week. Its a tuff deal when you own land as you feel you should spend time there even when there are other opportunities you might want to do.
I like the west hunts but they do consume time.
