Is there any preference in size based on type of soil? Or another way of saying it, do the sixes have sufficient root mass and soil medium to support the top on light soil? With bare roots, I have felt seedling conifers are a better choice on light soils(drier years) than transplants were. I don't think it matters with plugs. I'm not planting in sand here so I guess I can't say for sure, but survival/success here has been pretty much the same whether planting 4s or 6s or even 20s. One thing I will say is that the Black Hills spruce 4s I planted have been the slowest growing evergreens I've ever planted...plug or bareroot.

All this tree talk, made me think I better get my order in to NCR...
100 Black Hills Spruce 100 Black Spruce 100 Scotch Pine 50 Ponderosa Pine 50 Chokecherry 50 Sargent Crab 50 RO Dogwood
20 3 foot bare root Swamp White Oaks
They are sold out of Cedar and Oak plugs, which sucks, but this will have to do.

I was looking at the NCR site today and saw they had "<500" ROD plugs in size 6. So I called them up and ordered 60 of them. I'm gonna try to sneak in 4 plantings where I cluster 15 of them and then put in about a 3-4' diameter cage. Won't go deep into the woods with them, but I'm thinking one up by the shack, one by the apple trees in the back yard, and the other two where I've already got openings made. I've already got the cage material and cardboard to mulch them, so it should be a quick and affordable try.

Old thread...with NCR moving and apparently in some kind of transition I started looking for other sources. I wish I would have found this site before placing orders with Musser Forest, University of ID, and Todd County NRCS. Still, I figured I'd pick up a flat of Norway Spruce. Always room for more evergreens stores.lodholznursery.com/

Norway spruce are my favorites here. They grow faster than other spruces, but not as fast as pines. They are browsed on less than pines, but will get browsed in late winter/early spring in high traffic areas.

Just might order some white pine. I was looking at chief river nursery and they were $344 for 400 plugs. I’ll never plant a damned bare root conifer again.

Chief River seems high priced on everything they sell. I've never bought anything from them. I was surprised at the prices on Lodlholz' plugs. I'm hoping they're decent quality. If they are, I think I found my new plug supplier

If I'm able to find some of those that I've planted in a couple years I'll plant some more.
