What do you guys think of Ponderosa Pine? I would recommend sticking with red pine instead of ponderosa pine. I dug up some pinderosa pine ditch seedlings years ago while turkey hunting the black hills. I planted them on my rusk county Wisconsin land and they are doing fine, but they grow slower than red pines planted the same time.

Same. Ordered a flat of white pine. I love white pines, but have only planted a couple hundred here. I fear they'll all get hoovered by the deer. If I'm able to find some of those that I've planted in a couple years I'll plant some more. Never had a problem at the old place. See what happens at the new place.

What do you guys think of Ponderosa Pine? I like them. I've planted a few hundred here. They've proven to be hardy and grow pretty quickly. Deer do browse them in high traffic areas however (every damn species of conifer I've planted gets browsed in high traffic areas).

I think the deer prefer anything different.

Norway spruce are my favorites here. They grow faster than other spruces, but not as fast as pines. They are browsed on less than pines, but will get browsed in late winter/early spring in high traffic areas. How do Norway’s handle seasonally wet feet Stu? It says they like moist soil, but do they handle swamp edges as well as Black Spruce?

It says they like moist soil, but do they handle swamp edges as well as Black Spruce? They've done well here. "Wet" is subjective, but Norways here have done well on the edges of RCG marshes/swamps. I wouldn't say they do as well in wet ground as Black Spruce, but again...are we talking wet or are we talking wet?

Anyone ordered from Itasca Nursery lately? Only place I could find Black Spruce Plugs. They have some larger ROD Plugs still as well.

Deer do browse them in high traffic areas however (every damn species of conifer I've planted gets browsed in high traffic areas). I just contacted Musser Forests and added 100 Ponderosa pines to my standing order. I'm going to dump a bunch of them in an area where I've been clearing out old hinge cut and stump re-gen ironwood.

Ordered some a couple hundred black spruce as well as 25 each of tamarack and ROD from Itasca.
Ordered a flat of White Spruce and Norway Spruce plugs from Lodholz.
I’ve got the free ROD transplants to move up from the home place as well.
That will keep the kids busy enough this spring.

I'm thinking of trying some Tamarack? How do they ship them, wrapped in bundles of 25? I do like using the styro-containers for keeping them watered.
