I just got my plugs from Lodholz and at first glance I am not impressed. I tried pulling one of the smaller (4") plugs and it wouldn't come out as a plug, pretty much just roots with growing medium falling away. I'll take a better look at them tomorrow, but right now I'm thinking about growing them out in the flat for the summer and planting in fall. These plugs aren't at all comparable to the plugs I've received from NCR in the past or the plugs I get from Univ. of ID. I doubt I'll order these again. I've only ordered 6S sized plugs from NCR which are just bigger plugs by design and were 30% more expensive so I wasn't expecting them to match that quality exactly. I tend to agree with you that that I probably won't order from Lodholz again or these size plugs again at least. It would seem that you get what you pay for, but it was a worth a shot. The trees I have on order from Itasca are 6S and 10S so I'm assuming they will be much better than these.

What time in the fall would you plant?Mine came today to my parents house. I’m guessing they aren’t impressive either. Mid October probably

I was happy with my Norway Spruce from Itasca, but I think the way to go is largest plug possible. I think I’m done with the 200+ plug plants. Maybe 50-100 at a time with larger sizes.

I've thought about that too. Mind you, I'm never planting another tree ever again. But say I did, how quickly can a guy plant those larger plugs? I don't think they'd fit in a dibble hole, would they? I've got gaps in my road screen that are gonna need addressing if I can figure a way around my planting ban.

Just checked my white pine. I can’t even get one out without fear of breaking it. Will try and grow them out this year and try to over winter in the garden. Don’t want to fall plant. Mine are maybe 4-5”. Not like Itasca several years ago.

To be honest, Lodholz should be ashamed of what they're sending out.

I only about 1/3 of them to come out as plugs. I let them dry out a bit which helped, the rest I'll try and keep alive until fall or figure something else out. Looks like he was growing them in a potting mix that was not holding up as a plug. Not sure if this is a new product for him, but they shouldn't sell plugs anymore.

I generally "vote" for companies with my dollars, but the plugs Lodholz sent me really pissed me off. I sent them as nice of an email as I could while telling them what bullshit their plugs are as was possible. Maybe they're just new at this. Maybe they're terrible business people. I don't know. I do know they should know why I'll never order from them again.

Itasca plugs showed up. Much happier. Added cost, but clearly a better product.

I checked on them last year, I nearly fell over. The growth was amazing, some rubbing, but overall they shot up fast!

How is the plug extracted like that? Plug planting tool still work for those? They removed them from the styrofoam ship them in bundles of 10 plugs that they wrap in cellaphane. The spruce is 6S which matches the plug tool exactly. The tamarack is a 10S and ROD are 20S which just requires me to wiggle the tool around a bit. I’m finding the bigger plugs actually work better with the tool when they have been shipped this way as it doesn’t leave an air gaps if the plugs are smooshed.
