How is the plug extracted like that? Plug planting tool still work for those? They removed them from the styrofoam ship them in bundles of 10 plugs that they wrap in cellaphane. The spruce is 6S which matches the plug tool exactly. The tamarack is a 10S and ROD are 20S which just requires me to wiggle the tool around a bit. I’m finding the bigger plugs actually work better with the tool when they have been shipped this way as it doesn’t leave an air gaps if the plugs are smooshed. You can get 10s and 20s in with a plug tool? How would you rate the amount of air left in the soil after you close it up? Is it smushed tighter yet or they got a little breating room? I lean towards some breathing room if possible. That'd be a game changer if my plug tooler would work on 10s and 20s. I've never tried that big. Then again, I'm never planting another tree ever again. Could you post a pic of the planting tool you're using? I'd like to plant a row of spruce and a row of dogwood along the hay field once I get the debris piles cleared out of there.

Said screw it to the office today, I’m “working from land” today. I can be productive enough on conference calls with teams and blue tooth while I’m planting trees. Let me know if this works for pictures SD

I should clarify I’m working around wetland edges and softer ground where I can increase the diameter pretty effectively with the tool. Not sure that would be the case everywhere

I might have to try Itasca again next year as a hedge to the lodholz trees I’m going to grow out in the container this year and try to overwinter.

I put the plugs in this area two springs ago from NCR. This one doesn't look that pretty, but the height it put on it that time is pretty crazy. Handled the competition well.
How ugly can they can look at a couple years old and still turn into a respectable tree?

That’s a good tip. I’m sure you have mentioned that before. I think in this spot the grass didn’t grow up as high as I thought it would and they are pretty exposed.

Plugs seem to hit the “sweet spot” of growth in years 5-7. Just my observation. Here is one pine that was head high, and then took off.

I got this in the mail today. Hard Pass No good? Terrible. Pages 5-6 of this thread has more details. Not sure if they ever got back to Stu on his complaints. I’m guessing I’ll have less than 25% survival on mine.
