I painted my apple trees and it looks like Kerr has a lot of fruit Spurs. Are they visible in the above picture or am I dreaming? I see lots of fruit spurs Art. I'll second that. Looks like a great tree. I've got a young one going. No fruit yet.

My Kerr crab is just starting to drop apples. Maybe 5-10 % are falling. Chestnut crab is 95 % done dropping. This seems like a good pair for the bow hunter. They taste pretty good also. Quite a few will be headed for cider . Great pic Art, represents that variety well. Everyone i have seen describe kerr share your affection for this variety as well. Can't wait till mine is old enough some day!

My Wickson is starting to drop, I probably have 20+ apples on it but several have fallen. At the same time we have had allot of wind lately. This tree is on B118 and is a great grower and very healthy tree. I have read different opinions on cold hardyness, cummins claim zone 3 while others are zone 5. Jerry-how do they taste? I had a few apples last year and they were just ok. My tree is also on B118, but suffered some roundup burn. It should probably be stated that Golden Hornet is primary put in orchards for pollination as its a proliferate flowering crab and has smaller fruit so as far as edibility for wildlife absolutely but for us, i would have expected a wonderful report.

Excellent pic! Great tree protection as well man, nice job! I do see that we are going for the free love approach on tree pruning. I have wickson as well, hasn't been a great growing graft for me in the nursery. Its a cider variety as well i believe more of a southern climate variety though i think. I think its supposed be more hardy then the hewes crab though.

I have said before I love how my Kerr trees have grown. They will probably be the only tree I buy going forward. Well they are also the first tree to give me fruit. 3rd leaf and I got three apples. I tried one last weekend and it wasn't bad and still rock hard. I left the last two to see how long they hang. Most of my native trees are bare already so this could fill a great spot. HAHA! Chummer I always enjoy hearing from my NY friend. I see you have some excitement over your first producer. I totally get that, GALA is mine just last year with about 20 apples and no i wouldn't just plan Gala, but i feel what your laying down. I purposely am making myself wait to try the varieties i have until my trees fruit, its part of the excitement that I can't wait to share with family and friends. Oh and the deer too........

The issue I have to date is the cages I built are to small so I plan on replacing the cages in my orchard with larger cages. These smaller cages will be moved across the property where I will let the trees self prune.

Freebie your cage doesn't seem to be overly small i just don't think you want branches much lower then the top foot of the cage to form then you train them from their, can't help but lose some of those branches to to deer because thats just the nature of fruit trees in wild country.

Where do you get the Kerr crabs? SLN has them. I sure they are out for this year but you will be able to get them for next year.

Where do you get the Kerr crabs? I think mine came from Cummins. If you decide to graft, please let me know as I could spare a bit of scion.

Yesterday, I pulled the last five apples off of the Kerr. I wanted to see how long they would hang there.

As mentioned before sounds like the perfect tree for an archery guy. Also, I wonder if grouse would peck that them on my OTC farm?
