None of this pertains to any of gents, mostly because its about Michigan and its NW 12 APR.
I have lived and hunted in Mason County, all of my life. I befriended a kid in school somewhere around the age of 11 or 12, his family was into deer hunting. I had really only ever messed around with my cousins blasting stuff in the woods up until that point. Once I went I was hooked! They had this camping tradition, we'd take a camper to stateland and have a ball. Someone would shoot a spike, 4, or sixer just about every year (never me cuz well I never seen anything) but I loved the tradition of something that I felt apart of in some small way. So many of my memories from my early hunting days surround that tradition of friends, family & the outdoors.
A few years ago our local QDMA chapter and many others joined forced to bring a mandatory APR restriction over 12 counties to the NRC and they had a small segmented survey and it passed with a 5 year trial period. This is now the 4th year and its being voted on as we speak to make it final. Again this is not a public vote they just discreetly give surveys to folks that have hunted and/or purchased a license for the 1 of those 12 counties.
Look West Michigan has a shit ton of deer yet its still not easy to see or kill a legal antlered buck on state land which is all I had when I was growing up. I have 120 acres of great ground now but even still it proves difficult because of asshole neighbors and deer aren't real fond of rifle season, oh I should mention 120 acres and 5 trees. Bow hunting is limited.
My complaint and or frustration really comes down to a small interest group that seems to rip an already divided people further apart. Less & less folks are part of the tradition anymore. It used to be campers or hunters all over the place on stateland but APR's have wiped that experience out. I hunted that old state land spot about 6-7 times this year and never once did i run into a camp or person that didn't have private near by when I used to see a ton.
I know times change and/or people do and maybe the QDMA isn't such a small interest anymore and its change that is the majority. To me be its just a bummer to see what captured me in hunting was the friends and deer camp that is/was huge in Michigan not be around for the next generation to experience.
I have had some nice deer on camera, I showed on to Stu some time ago, we don't have booners around here that I have ever caught but I've seen some P & Y size. However I can still sleep pretty well if I never get a nice buck. Nope I've never killed 1 over '100 but I've let no less than 5 people hunt with me at my place and they have all killed '110-120. I'm just not selfish by nature, its not who I am.
Its seem the QDMA is all about being selfish in that who has the biggest crank. Perhaps that's why I'm so soured. I know probably none of this is going to make sense to 90% of you so for that my sincere apologies but I had to vent somewhere.
