We just had another shower through here tonight. I think we had five today....including two downpours. Big change from recent years.

I've been trying to get ahead on mowing. Forecast says rain tomorrow/tomorrow night, so I got both orchards and some trails mowed today. Friggin' yellow jackets stung me a few times on my side/back. I'll be finding that nest and giving them a drink of poison soon...

7 hours?? Sounds like u need some native grasses and flowers on most!!! I left a message at sherburne swcd today to look into natives for my ditches. Mowing the yard and ditches for an hour is bs. Rather just mow my yard in 15 minutes and be done.

I only mowed for about 5 hours...but I didn't mow the lawns/areas by the house. That'll be another 2+ hours, hopefully get that done on Friday. Then I'll have 5 or 6 hours of billy goating to get done.
When I moved here I swore I wasn't going to mow as much as I did at the old places. I mow a bit more now.

I was surprised when I looked at the drought monitor last night and saw one year ago we were actually drought free according to the map and this year we are yellow. It seems crazy to think it was better last year than this at this point, at least according to the drought map.
But I do remember planting my plots in late may last year only to get essentially no decent rains after that. The germination was way better this year, so I think we are doing better this year than the drought monitor says and last year the opposite was true.
I really hope the rains continue all summer since we are due for a wet year.

^^^the drought monitor last year was inaccurate for my location.
That said, what kept much of MN out of drought status for quite awhile last year was the record or near record snow pack.

The annual faucet shut off is days away if the last several years pattern continues. Just glad for what has fallen to give some strength going into summer

You aren't using that Kubota cab tractor and Woods flail mower we've got in our fleet?

Rather just mow my yard in 15 minutes and be done. I like to mow what I call the home orchard, as well as a couple of sections of the deer orchards. And I mow an access path to one deer stand. (Other access paths are just mowed once in August. Then I mow to the granary and the shed where the fishouse and old boat is stored. Mowing the orchard and around some of the young deer apple trees gives me a good look at management. Thistle problems, tent caterpillars, gophers, new growth to pinch off, insect pressure, status of topworks and their management.

My wife mows more whenever she mows and it is an area of disagreement. She tends to find every rock that I have thrown out of the yard or orchard. Or she finds rocks where the old barn was buried. Or the wire cage that was used for apple trees and I sat it aside in the tall grass where we do not mow. I sharpened the blades one day as she was going to do some mowing. Where does she start? The weeds and gravel along the driveway!

I find some humor here Art, its funny how many times you can have a conversation but nothing sinks in for a party that is directly involved.

I'd been thinking the farmer who leases everything around here was going to let some fields go fallow this year. Wrong. They worked up the ground yesterday and are planting beans this morning. It seems late to me, but I guess it is still May.
