Kids love to trap! For me it's almost as much fun as hunting, just wish fur prices were worth a damn. I coyote is smart and hard to trap. Congrats!

Nice catch.
I’d love to learn to trap. Tough to do as an absentee land owner.

Nice job! Those boys look like they are the perfect age to beat up the raccoon population. Your on the right track if your knocking off a 'Yote in the first crack at it. Congrats.

Nice looking fur. Great job on getting the coyote. You may catch others there now that the location is scented up with coyote smell.

The coyote had nice fur. Going to surprise the boy and have his mountain man ice fishing hat made out of it. He has been asking for one.

I'm going to be trapping coyotes next year on my land. Now that I can hopefully work remote I'll be able to do some sets and catch a few of them. My abutter used to trap 5-8 each fall but, hasn't set traps the past two years. I've been studying their running routes in the early snow this years so I have 8-10 sites in mind to hit all at once when I do set them out. I'm also going to try using our call a few mornings right after 12/15. I've been hearing them howl almost every morning.

Ogemaone,
When you have time would you do a few photos of the set? Do you use local dirt to cover or bring in dry dirt/peat moss? Do you use wax paper, etc? Since you were successful maybe you could guide the rest of us? I think we all could use some predator control.

I use the wax paper to cover the pan and keep dirt from falling under it. Tried other stuff but always end up going back to the waxed paper. I use local dirt, but I put it in a bucket and keep it covered so that I always have dry dirt to shift over the trap. For yotes two things are important; scent control around the trap and making sure the trap is on a solid bed (they will feel it shift every time).

I'll get some pictures of my sets. I where gloves for setting the traps and digging the set for scent control. I have used wax paper over the pan, you need to really crinkle it up and losses it up to keep noise down. I've been told a coyote can hear it when they step. Since it is starting to freeze, I am using peat moss to cover the sets. I use the dirt just to anchor the set good so there isn't any wobble then cover with peat. I will throw some of the grasses and maybe a little dirt over it to make the set look natural again. I then place the lure in the dirt hole and I've been dropping some fox urine on the back side. I usually place a small log or rock behind the hole to help guide so the have to come from the front side of trap. Here is a pic of set. You can see the hole with bait in it and log behind it.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking I'd have to wait until mid November to trap them because of the bear on my property. Well they've disappeared for now so there's hope. This guy needs to take a dirt nap.
