Yep. And my logical follow up question is, which plants pull up the most moisture, and I'm near certain no such information exists. I've been gone all evening but have given this some thought. You might do a google search "transpiration by species" or something like that (transpiration is the key word here). You might find something relevant to your area.& I have read discussions where the emerald ash borer will eventually make our black ash swamps wetter due to death of ash. I have balsam mixed in my ash swamp and I did plug in some black spruce. Hopefully these with tamarack will maintain cover.

Does it compete with RC?

Art, Do you have any red cedar in wet areas? How has it done? Does it compete with RC? I have some red cedar in wet areas. Most of the time it is NOT in RC. I may have to take a walk and be more observant.

I like cedar too. But I do live in the only state that doesn't have a native pine. Love the pics on this thread. No prettier habitat than tall grass interpersed with evergreens Then add an apple tree! The pictures on this thread are giving me evergreen envy for sure. Great looking habitat. I'm hoping to have some of those blocks on my place in 10 years or so, but the handful of lone soldiers will have to do in the meantime. bbcode link image

A mix of spruce/hardwoods..or .aspen mix. Hard to beat, I wish I had more areas like that.

I forgot I said I would take pics. Birds plant plenty cedars when they have a perch to land on. These elms are getting my hilltop started.

I'm still planting, I don't think I'm sick I'm just trying to complete my plan. Rain would sure help. My sandy soil causes a high mortality rate.
This year:
200 Black Hills Spruce 500 Black Spruce 18 Apple Trees 4 Pears 25 lilac
Next year we will see, most likely less of everything except Black Hills Spruce.

Tree plugs go pretty well when in a wind break. If I had to I could do 400 a day pretty easy. I did 200 this morning, 6-9am and I have 200 left for tomorrow morning. Jim planting tool works well and makes pretty easy work of plugs. I should be done by now and enjoying the weekend but with the late spring I got started late.

Damn late spring dampened the Old Mill freeborn and Blb hook up tonight.
Too much work still. My fish more goal hasnt panned out. Today we pulled old fence posts and wire. Dug boulders out of trails. Blazed new shooting lanes for dads gun stand. Bobcat is sitting in the woods for another marathon tomorrow. Might fish next month again.
