500 black spurce and 200 norways on the way from Itasca in 6a. What kind of root gel should I get? If any If you are planting in wet soils, I say skip the gel.

Brad as long as you are logging Balsam will grow well. When I bought my property it had been select cut the year before. The natural growth of balsam since 2004 is amazing. Lot of the 1 to 2 foot balsams are now 10 to 15 feet. I never planted any of them and the deer use them for bedding year round. Also if you have some really wet areas I would give Tamarac a try, even though they lose their needles they grow thick and deer use them for bedding.

Do they bed in there in the middle of winter and there is 3' of snow? That would be the goal of this. So keeping the needles and providing a wind break and limit the snow depth is going to be important I think. I can make summer and fall bedding with a chainsaw. But I want to keep them here rear round.

I don't worry so much about deer staying all winter especially if there are lots of deer, as they will really do a number on your natural browse. You don't want your woods looking like Bullwinkle's or Nofo's. lol

I wonder if I should consider not getting the norways and get tameracks instead. Keep 500 blacks and get 200 tameracks .

If you notice in the picture that the balsam are growing on outer edge and humps in Tamarac. If it would be me I would get Tamarac, balsam and black spruce. I would plant the Tamarac in the wetter areas, the balsam on high spots in amongst the Tamarac and surround the whole thing with the black spruce. By your pictures I see that balsam grow good by you, black spruce is an unknown.

Black Hills Spruce is a great tree, for edges, near water.
