Thats what I have found. I have the 20 lb solo, and if I am doing small plots I much prefer my Scotts. It holds about 3 or 4 lbs of clover seed. Plenty for doing smaller plots.

I highly recommend one with the arm/wrist loop thing (if you get a small hand held one). I have two versions of the same thing; one with just a handle and one with the loop thing. I ALWAYS grab the one with the loop. I have this one...stripped the gears in it....i think some seeds became wedged in it. I vented the new electric one to try to prevent that....gives the seeds a place to fall out.

I think Stu mentioned a long time ago that the gate on the Solo is really good control for small seeds.

I've spent $56 on worse things, so I'm willing to give the Solo a shot. The old hand crank cloth bag style I had before just wasn't quite built tough enough and eventually the gears stripped and then things started going downhill fast.

I ALWAYS grab the one with the loop. That is the cheap turd I use. I think it's like less than $20. Not worth a crap for larger seed like peas or even cereal grains, because it doesn't hold enough, but for small seed or really small plots - works fine. Unless your my youngest daughter.....she is left handed and hates the damn thing!

My solo spreader arrived today and I'm impressed so far. It seems well designed and built, but I haven't had a chance to use it yet. It's definitely more robust than the bagged spreader that lasted 10 years

I’m gonna convert one of you manual crankers by the end of this weekend. You can convert me if you supply the hopper assembly, I've got the blowers.

I'm in the same boat- I have a leaf blower so if I could use that for a reasonable price is give it a shot. Shooting seeds from a leaf blower seems like more fun than turning a crank.

Cheap atv spreader here. Works with anything I've put threw it from brassicas to beans. I hate walking across a field a million times and still have missed spots.

Will those cheap atv spreaders handle fertilizer?

Will those cheap atv spreaders handle fertilizer? Yep.....I think they all will do fertilizers. I own a Herd Seeder.....and just modified it to fit on the receiver hitch of our UTV. Also spent $20 and put in a reducer plate for small seeds. This allows me to get a fine spread on Brasica and Clovers, etc. I hate to walk and turn a crank. I know lots of folks like their Solo seeders. I've not been too enamored with mine. Seldom use it anymore. Would rather use a small whirly bird spreader.
