Exactly what I was thinking this weekend. I did a very small area (1/10) of an acre with my solo and was thinking I could use a small spreader. The solo is nice but it is large.

The hopper on my 10+ year old Solo spreader started to disintegrate. I imagine due to UV breaking down the plastic. I figured the thing was toast but did an internet search for a new hopper. For $20 one will be here in a couple days I lost that little threaded plastic nut that you tighten to set the opening width and I sent Solo an email asking what the thread type was so I could rig something up to work. They ended up sending me a replacement part at no charge. That kind of service is pretty rare these days and I was very impressed.

I need to talk this through with SD. I don't understand how a guy can spread more evenly with this than a regular spreader. With tiny seeds, I don't know how a guy can tell where they are flying either way, TBH.

Me too. I just plant early and plan on going back in three or four weeks to spread where I missed to begin with.
That said, I've got the Earthway bag spreader, and it's a pain in the ass. I've finally mostly figured out a technique for filling it without spilling more than I get in. But, the way it sort of dangles at an angle, I am never sure if I'm spreading seed in front of me or off to the left.

Have a solo spreader for sale, used once, back couldn't take it. Open to offers. You're located where in MN? If it was close enough and the price was right, I'd buy it as a back up. I've put literal tons of fertilizer/pell lime/milorganite/seed through my Solo.

With tiny seeds, I don't know how a guy can tell where they are flying either way, TBH. The visibility is the same coming out of a tube at 500 CFM or flopping off a spin spreader. With a blower, you've got constant pressure which also means you have constant distance. By coming out of a blower tube, you can point exactly where you want it to go. Practice a little, and you'll know which click to set your gate opening for a given seed, and then you just walk and wag that thing. No more running, no more slow crank, fast crank, low angle, high angle, swat mosquito sequence. You can drive your spread rate so low you can go over it 3 times and still have seed left.

I have a Solo which I have not used in 2 years. I modified my Herd seeder to add the small seed plate......and now I can do brassica and clover without an issue. I just calulate the plot size and seed weight......and drive around until the hopper is empty. Pretty slick.
I recently bought a 2" receiver tube.....which I am going to weld to the front of my UTV at the winch mount. Then I can front mount my seeder and the mount will allow easy on and off of the seeder. Makes it easy to see where I am shooting seeds as I drive around......AND MORE IMPORTANTLY allows me to keep my sprayer mounted on the rear of my UTV all summer.
I think my Kawa 400 is getting old (25 years??).....and the gas tank seems to leak now. I may let that machine go down the road.....and just get along with my UTV. Much easier to drive and so much more reliable, etc. Some of my equipment is gonna have to go. Too much stuff to maintain......and my land is now "broken".

Did you ever get your finger in one of those solo's when they are spinning hard? Arghhhh Yep, one time. I like my Solo. I have since I bought the thing. I'm doing things on a smaller and less automated scale than most I guess.
