You guys are too funny. Seems every year you give me a hard time each fall about getting here and playing golf. Then.....when the weather turns a bit sour.....and your all hold-up in your homes for the winter......the questions come about how life in the desert works. Very funny to me. I'm here to tell you that this lifestyle is everything you could want it to be for about 3 to 6 months of the year.....depending on your circumstances and need to hunt....and what you might be able to afford. Still......I have never met ANYONE that has moved here from the northern climates that would go back to living in the north. They all move one way......north to south. Just saying. Lots of good reasons too. Including health, lifestyle, cost of living, and lots more. Not entirely sure what keeps me attached to MN.....but I an still a resident there. Maybe I should have my head examined? . FORE!

Maybe I should have my head examined? . FORE! I should have added....that many of the folks that move here on a permanent basis....have a need to get out of here in the summer....due to the oppressive heat. Many of them have a place in the north or a motorhome.....or a place up in the mountains in OZ where the altitude makes the summer tolerable. Pretty nice really. OZ has lots of variety of lands, altitudes and climates. You need to be here to get that I suppose......but the desert area here in "the valley" is really quite small......and when you leave the valley you also leave the warm winter temps. It's a whole 'nother lifestyle 200 miles north of here than it is where I live. When I am playing golf.....those folks might be shoveling snow. The altitude is a real game changer here.

bring your money. I will teach you. . I am the best 29 handicap you ever seen brother! I never played golf "in earnest" until I retired. Golf is a hard game to become "good" at. MOST everyone I know has had to work very hard at it to become somewhat good at golf. Many of the guys I play with have quite variable scores.....as they get some blow-up holes along the way. Getting "good' does not happen quickly for most of us. I see newbies come here and they are like you and me....with handicaps around 30 or so. Seems we all have certain weak spots at times....sometimes it the drive....sometimes the short game.....and other times sand play is an issue....etc. Little by little we work our handicaps to what we can. Mine can vary a bit......it's always a work in process. The thing is.....your scores really does not matter that much to most folks. As long as your pace of play is good.....and you keep most shots in bounds so everyone is not searching for your ball all day.....nobody could care two-schmidts about your score. (they also dont remember much.....lol) . Currently I am somewhat happy when I break 90....hoeping for 85 or better......but I really could get stoked with an 80 or lower. It just does not happen on an every day basis.....and I am just as likely to break 100....as I am an 80.....if I'm not careful. Damn game is a challenge.....and get's in your blood.....or your head. . FORE! It's all good.

Today I had to make a trip near a retirement community I thought looked interesting from my past browsing on the web. Just never got past this place......until today. I spent an hour or so snooping around a community called Westbrook Village. It's a community of 4200 homes and it's got two nice golf courses. The homes look to be of high quality......and this is said to be an upscale community to the Huge nearby Sun City. area. Driving around I very much liked what I saw. The commons areas, pools clubhouses, and golf courses looked great. Many of these areas have recently been or are in the process of having some upgrades and improvements. The homes are all stucco and tile roofs and seem to be maintained very nicely. A gal I talked to at the community pool said they enforce good care of the homes appearances......and it really shows. Like so many. areas here....this place has a wall around the community......and limited entry points.....but it is not patrolled or have a security force in place.....just the local police. This is the most common around here.....and then the neighborhood has their own "watch program" using the neighbors to watch after one another. I'm told these areas are quite secure....but they all some some issues from time to time.....just as we do "back home".
This community is all built-out, so only resale homes are available. The oldest homes go back to the 80's and the newest go into up to about 2005 or so. I did not see very many signs of homes for sale.....and I can understand why. Super location for access to all of the better shopping at Bell Road and the nearby shopping areas, movies, sports dome, close proximity to the airport, and Scottdsale, a short drive to Sedona, etc. Talking to a quite knowledgeable gal at the pool desk......Homes here start at about 150,000 and could range to a high of $400,000 on the golf course with all the best amenities. Most would fall in the $250 area for a nicely maintained 2 bedroom / 2+ bath home with 2 car garage and all the popular stuff. (1800 square feet or so....plus the garage). I dont know much about taxes or HOA fees here....but low taxes is why folks buy in a "retirement community" as the residents dont have to pay the school taxes.
The golf runs extra as it does at most places.......and that could set you back some.....depending on how much you play. Normally homeowners pay from about $35 to $60 a round in the peak months......and far less in the summer (like $10 or $15 - seriously cheap).....as not many play golf in the hot months. Those golf fees are prevalent in most of the retirement communities.......and they are another $25 or so for the folks off the street.
Several folks here have asked me about nice homes and where to look.....so I thought I would throw this one out there. If I were looking for an affordable home in an upscale, nice hood......this would be high on my list.....and you wont break your bank piggy bank......maybe just put a few cracks in it.
Funny how the gal I talked to said she had a home in MN and a home in OZ for many years......but later gave up the MN home as she was getting older. I hear this tale time after time from so many people. Almost invariably they end up moving to OZ permanently after a few years......as they don't want to deal with the high costs of MN living and the cold of winter any more. Cant say I have ever seen or heard a similar tale up on the Tundra. Just sayin' FORE!

How many weeks in advance to get a tee time at most courses there Foggy? Not that far out MO. For example at our courses..... we cannot make a "request" more than a week in advance (and most folks make the requests precisely one week in advance and then they get what they ask for)......and then we will get a "confirmation" five days before the requested time/ date. If we put in a request a few days before the time we want.....we generally get something pretty close to that time.....but it's better the sooner we make the request. It's all done via the web.....and really quiet seamless. (sometimes we have had to haggle a bit with the desk to get what we need....but not a normal thing.) Of course if your putting in for a time when it's a major men's day.....you may get your times pushed around some......but after your here a bit.....you learn how to play the game. One thing I learned today......from the guy at the golf desk at the above club.....was that you need about 18 holes of golf for every 2000 homes (a general rule of these communities). He recited to me the home numbers and golf courses for several popular places.....and it all adds up to a workable situation. Feb and March are the peak times here......and at times the courses get a bit chocked up at those times. They all do.....but everyone seems to get along and it has worked out for me.
