I made a scion want list note on my I-phone so every time I read about a variety that sounded good I could write it down immediately. In the past I relied on my memory and 6 months later when it was time to order stuff I forgot most of them. I think most of the suggestions came from this forum, so I think they will work well. I haven't decided whether I should stick with the red splendor crabapple rootstock I used successfully last spring or go with the wild apple rootstock from SLN. I’d diversify Ben. I wouldn’t put all my eggs in one basket. A disease may hit some day. Diversity will prevent a total loss. good point, I'll go with the SLN rootstock-

I don't remember getting that question last time, anybody else receive this question? I received the same email. I think it's an auto-generated email to make sure people know that they are getting scion and not actual apple trees. I replied and said the type of rootstock I'm planning on ordering and I should be good to go-

When does GRIN typically ship? I am working on ordering my rootstock and want to try and match the timing of when I will receive the rootstock.
Thanks!

I'll send you some scion if you need any from me though, so just let me know when you want me to trim the scion off the tree and when you want it shipped.

Last year I grafted on March 28. When you graft that early do you then just keep them cool and the roots moist until planting or do you have to pot them right away? Last year my rootstock didn't arrive until May, so that's when I grafted and I kept them in the garage for a week then planted them in pots. This year I bet my SLN rootstock will get here sooner, so it's possible that I'll be grafting while my ground is still frozen so potting the trees could be an issue if my dirt supply is frozen solid.

Ben, I have a dark unheated room I keep them in. I get a plastic tub full of moist sawdust and keep them in there for several weeks until the grafts have healed. I put a plastic bag over the top to keep moisture in there as well. I think the key is you don’t want them to wake up too soon before the graft union heals or the graft will eventually fail. It might lead out but, eventually it’ll dry out and fail. After a a month or so when the local trees are starting to leaf out I pot them and bring them outside in the shade on the north side of the house and let them slowly wake up. It’s better to do this later than early. This is is a good grafting video by a guy who grafts for Fedco.

^^^^
I’ll add that he does things differently than I do as far as warming up the rootstock for a few days prior to grafting and I don’t use the black grafting paint. I use a wax mixture instead.

My grafting success has been going down for three years. The last two years have been topworks. I probably need a sharper blade and should be using rubber grafting bands to get them tighter. I tried some electrical tape this last spring... It all might be my scion storage and them starting to break dormancy as I have delayed topworking to try and escape late spring frosts. I have a cold uninsulated garage. What is the best way to store the scion with this? Just put them in a fridge in the garage that is not plugged in?
