I’ve got some Anaros but no fruit yet. I need to look for Jonsib, but know I tried a few years ago. I just read on another forum that Waubay tasted pretty decent. I requested Waubay from GRIN a couple years ago, but they didn't send me scions. I hope I get them this time around. After doing some reading on Anaros, I'm starting to think that may be what the crab I call Tank is.

Small leaves and slow growth. Tank is not showing these things yet. I need to see if anaros is on dolgo or ranetka.

That crab is growing about 30' from another wild crab that I grafted Tank to last spring. If I can get them both to produce fruit, I should be able to figure out if Tank and Anaros are the same.

Here’s my 2019 GRIN research report.
I did not graft any GRIN scions this year due to health issues in early spring that carried through most of the summer. My top works on older existing apple trees were affected by the severe apple scab out break in the late summer of 2018. Most of those grafts prematurely dropped their leaves. They survived the winter into the spring of 2019. Most were destroyed by porcupine who ate the fresh growth or bear who busted off whole limbs. I would say less than 10% of those grafts on topwork from 2028 still survive.
The rest of the scions I grafted to B118 rootstock in 2018 survived the apple scab out break and the winter into 2019. They put on very little growth in 2019 due to the stress of the apple scab from the previous year and the the drought we had during the summer of 2019 from June through late August. I would say less than 6” of growth for any tree. No difference really on variety. Hopefully they will take off in 2020. I plan to use ramial wood chips on those trees this year to help if there is another drought.

^^^It's nice to see a bunch of requests that I don't have. If you get some takes, I know where to get scions in the future.

That Blenheim Orange sounds like it will be firm in November. The Linda Sweet are a sweeter 1.5" crab from South Dakota. When I was a kid I remember having Northern Spy in the stores. I liked them much better than the red delicious. I had my first bite out of a Gold Rush this year and it was good for my taste and should hold into November. I want more of the Baldwin as that was a big northeast apple until the winter of 1947.

I grafted some Linda Sweet a few tears ago and I think they all failed.

Northern spy is a favorite here. I picked about 50 pounds this year. Still have a few left in the fridge. I have been getting apples off my Nova Spy the last couple years and they are excellent to. They are zone 4, the ones at my house are doing great but the one at camp is struggling. Still alive but the bark doesn’t look good and some of the tips die off every winter. I keep waiting for it to turn the corner or die but it just keeps squeaking by.

I think I grafted it in '17 but would need to check the tag. You gave me swamp crab scion way back in either '11 or '12. I grafted it to a seedling (I forget what kind of apple I kept the seeds from), and it's now about 12' tall. The swamp crab has produced fruit annually for at least 3 or 4 years now. I've got maybe 8-10 varieties tacked onto that tree. I'd have to check if there's any scions on it right now. It's possible

Carl, have you tasted Golden Russet fruit? I had some for the first time a few years ago and liked them enough to plant 2 trees from Burnt Ridge the next spring ('16 I think). I'm anxiously waiting for those trees to fruit

It's possible I remember giving you the scion. I wish I could find a good way to propagate it as rootstock. I have grown a few from root cuttings and they have done well while topworked. Have you checked it for viable seed? I tried once with no germination. Seed was not filled out.

I've got a couple trees here growing in moist soil that are similar in appearance and the fruit is also similar. There must be some kind of natural selection at work.
