I don't get far enough from the power plant to have to need more than that little battery pack Bob posted. I originally bought that for boat fishing. The Navionics app would eat serious battery during a day of fishing. When it gets cold in hunting season I’ve had my phone battery drop out from 30% to dead. Those battery packs charge it back up quickly. That solar one is probably over kill but, it you were camping it might do the trick.

^. Was thinking of you today as I welded some brackets for my drag. Also used a cut-off saw, and an angle grinder, and my bench grinder, etc. Charged batteries, powered my well.....and you get the picture. If you buy that generator.....you have lost your mind. . FORE!

FORE! The only thing I've lost is a $65 monthly power bill. That's an opportunity cost of almost $20,000 at a risk free rate of 4%. That's my four wheeler, flail mower, and perch pond. All to run a grinder at camp for ten minutes every other year? I'll take the equipment and pond first. File that.

And how on earth could you consume $65 worth of power? Some stuff just dont add up. The first time I talked to the power company they had some silly numbers too.....but then I got ahold of the guy that does the installations.....and my prices were slashed quickly. I've got 200 amps available and it is costing me about $15 per month for most months. I think I paid about $1500 to get the power run into a box on my land. Be creative man. (find the right guy....and tell him you may build on the land in the time to come ).

(find the right guy....and tell him you may build on the land in the time to come ). The power coop up there and I had a conversation when I was planning the project. At that time, they told me they were charging $60/mo for the meter, and that was before tax and a single kW was used. Throw in tax, and you're at $65. I'm being generous and not even counting any power consumption. So opportunity cost? You have to annuitize it. $65/mo x 12 months = $780/year. To account for what it would take to earn $780 per year risk free at 4% which is also generous: $780 / 4% = $19,500. Knock that risk free rate down to 2.5% and now you're at $31,200. If I were to make $780 in interest payments to myself using SD's patented and whacky bank on yourself scheme, I could borrow $19,500 from my left pocket to put a wheeler, flail mower, and fish pond in my right. For right now, the bank is running low on capital, so the system needs about 11 months to replenish before I can start working on other features. I've got visions of having that mower and wheeler by this time next year. A few other grown up things need to be tended to first. I gotta convert my old 401k to Roth, so I'll have to write a check to the IRS for that first. Once that is done, I can get back to plowing money into my doe refuge.

I've already recouped a third of my entire solar system cost, and I don't even have dust on the batteries yet.
