There's an awful lot of dead black ash around here. I don't know what's killing them, but something is.

My friend used to get birch to burn in his house. Spendy stuff. But it really did burn a good smell. Birch firewood, cut, split by hand, dried, and delivered, paid for lots of vet school. No peddlers license needed in those days.

What’s a cord of birch or red oak sell for now?
I see a few ads, it’s not cheap.

I thought I saw split oak for sale for around $300/cord. at gas stations here they sell the disease free certified small bundles for $6 each. I can't believe anyone would pay that, but they sell pallets of them out frequently.

I’m done for the year until I start cutting in December. Each bay has 3 cord and then there’s and extra 8’ row on the front of 3 of the bays. Right when I was about to finish up today, Ron, the abutter stopped by and wanted to know if I’d like a cord of black cherry that he cut down this week. I told him I was done for now. He cut the cherry down because the tent caterpillars were in them thick. I don’t think he realizes that the tree will survive them if it’s not hit two years in a row. He didn’t want them in his apples.

I don't know the exact price of firewood up by my place, but it's dirt cheap. I think my neighbor told me he could buy semi-trailer loads of 8' logs for something like $20/cord delivered.
I remember thinking to myself, "At that price, why would anyone ever go make their own?" It was cheap. When i was a kid, we'd haul a pickup load 60 miles into the twin cities and get $100/load split and stacked.

I believe around here they’ve been $1200-1600 because the guy my niece used to rent from used to buy one load a year and cut. It varied from year to year with diesel prices and market glut. I see $250-300 a cord around here but, once December/January hits it goes to $400.

I wonder if the low price by me is more so a means to keep guys working between jobs, and a factor of short hauls from wherever it was cut.
