for a campfire or fireplace.....it's hard to beat dry, split birch logs. Nice flame, cracking fire, good heat, easy to light. For the best heat, I like ash, red elm, or oak. Heavier wood = more BTU's I hate splitting birch. It usually twists and has lots of knots but, it does make good campfire wood. I use it for heating in the early fall and late spring. I save the maple for the colder months.

How much did you get for a cord of birch.....back in the "olden days"? .

I like the place, and definatly turn the grainery into a blind.
Fish ponds are an extremely appealing part of a place!
Camp fires are made with nasty old drift wood that is scrounged up just after dark while still soaking wet from running lines. They smoke like all get out and smell like hell.
All other fires should be made with hedge... hot, clean, great coals, etc. Nothing else is worth getting a chain dirty.

I've got about 20 trailer loads of logs and slash to take off my old place in Bertha. The guy I sold it to logged about 5 acres and left most of it on the ground. He's got a tractor there, and all I've got to do is load it up and bring it back to my wood pile. It's mostly oak, Ash, popple, and basswood.

There was some big oaks that he took out.
