I ran across a link where you could sort apples on the Orange Pippen site for self fertile or partially so and also for hardiness zones. Zones 3-4 showed several varieties that I have. Dolgo, Kerr , Northland, st Edmunds Russet, golden Hornet, Geneva Crab, and a few others. The link did say that Northland is from a dolgo cross. Does anyone have Roberts Crab? This information might be of value if a person was planting only one apple tree. When I was a kid, the only apple tree I knew of was a dolgo that fruited. I don’t remember any flowering crabs in northern Minnesota at that time either. No wild crabs. I don't have Roberts crab, what about it is appealing to you? Being self fertile? FWIW...my Northland crab produces fruit that is better for fresh eating than Dolgo (IMO anyway) and just a bit bigger. I believe they ripen about the same time though. It's a very vigorous grower here on Dolgo rootstock. edit...I did a quick search on Growing Fruit for Roberts crab. Looks like at least a few folks over there have it. Probably too late to get a scion this year, but could probably source it there next year. Did you look at Hocking Hills for it?

I didn’t pick fruit at the proper time, I guess. I can’t remember hearing of Robert’s crab and was just curious if anyone thought it was great. I have more than enough varieties and shouldn’t be looking at more.

I realize it's been a few years since you were a kid, but I have seen some big, old ornamental crabs around the I.Falls/Kabetogama general area. Looks like Robert's is a red flesh variety

Looks like Robert's is a red flesh variety I saw it was red flesh. I suspect that the pocket of light soil where I grew up did not have many of those old trees survive or else there wasn’t a tradition of planting them by farmers. There were some in town, about 5 miles away.

Evidently some apple breeding programs are brining in North American genetics. I couldn’t learn more from the link. Maybe those of us looking at feral trees aren’t too far off base. Hansen from South Dakota did this in the 30’s. Maybe earlier.

I was watching a Skillcult video and he thinks his seedlings that are prone to burr knots might be more likely to root when stooling or maybe even from cuttings.

I took 8-10 M111 cutting and dunked in Rooting powder and put into dirt. Waiting to see what happens.
