Good luck to him. I dont blame anyone for taking the kids. I felt the same with youth waterfowl and I said it wasnt needed, but what the hell. I took my son out. he shot ducks. Then took him out on regular opener and he shot ducks.
youth duck or deer, wont change anything with our kids getting involved in hunting. They are involved when they are born.

I have talked to about dozen hunters on this and 90% do not like it and they all have kids. It is over MEA, which is a time when many kids use to bow hunt, pheasant hunt, grouse hunt, duck hunt, goose hunt? I don't know why this was necessary. They can hunt all those seasons already? It will be interesting if we actually recruit more hunters.
Not opposed to youth hunts at all. In certain areas or states, Wisconsin, Iowa have them but they also do not have the early gun season we have. How about opening state parks or refuges to kids without opportunity for mentored hunts? Maybe have a weekend youth gun hunt in late November and cut the muzzy season down to 9 days?
There is no protection of archery weekends in MN, we have lost 4 or 5 weekends in the past 20 years to gun hunts. The argument is well it is a long archery season. Yes, not bad, but how many weekends are good quality hunts, maybe two? MEA was a fairly good time, but that is now a gun weekend. I personally will not be affected much by this, but some guys rely on public or they hunt on someone's land--how will this change it?
The true test to see how popular a youth hunt would be,,,have it proposed that next year it will be the first 4 days of gun season and then see how popular the surveys and feedback is?
This will not recruit more hunters. Its pretty much total BS about recruting. The forged hunter dads are the ones that will bring their kid out that would have already become a hunter hanging out at deer camp over the next several years. How many guys are going to stand up and go out on the street and ask a kid, "Hey, you wanna kill a deer this weekend?"...... that will not happen. So this "recruiting" effort is a total farse. I have a couple friends with land in Wisconsin. They have never brought their kids friends for the youth season... just their own kids. Their kids are obviously on the path to being a deer hunter without a youth season..... Liability may be another factor for not bringing someone else’s youth.

I thought the early youth hunts where to help increase the chance of success. Let they hunt before the hords of adult hunters have their shot.

South wind is bad for my current stand setups. Looks like it's the Nose Jammer Challenge this weekend. We just might have to improvise and hunt from the ground with our backs against a tree to play the wind. I'm actually looking forward to hunting NOT in a box blind for a change.

I been having trouble with that Nose Jammer. I can’t get close enough to the deer to spray it in their nose.
Suggestions?

Lots of trucks on approaches in otc in my travels this evening. Heard 2 gun shots checking cams on 2 farms. Talked to neighbor at our farm. He is 17. He rolled his eyes when i asked if he was going out. Lolll. He said its bow season. Good kid.

I am trying to convince myself that this is a good thing for our hunting heritage. I am seeing quite a few pictures of successful youth..
Could us older people just be too greedy?
Not to mention resistance to change.

Most of the successful hunter pictures I am seeing, seem to be the younger kids.
Maybe this will work....
