I like goldenrod (there are at least 3 different kinds here, I can't tell you "official" names of each) and generally leave it alone. The exception is when it tries to invade my clover plots. I have noticed that deer here will browse some types of the stuff and leave others alone.

It acts as a screen also as it gets about 4 to 5 feet tall.

Most of the farm I hunt has goldenrod all over. I don’t mind it. Wonder if the JPS Art knows there is a little worm inside the bulb of those in the fall??

I remember wondering what the deal was with all the little busted open bulbs around old farts' ice fishing holes when I was a kid. Cheap bastards wouldn't even buy bait

Stu, did your Burnet ever "take"? I had never really heard of it until my boss said he was going to plant some. I see a few sprouts here and there. I think a guy would be better off doing some light tillage to get it planted. I didn't stop to take a pic, but I found a fair amount of small burnet today. I'm kind of surprised I found as much as I did since that plot got a dose of Imox/Basagran/Nitrosurf this spring.

I did plant some last fall.....but I don't think I would recognize it if it hit me in the face. Also not sure how resisitant it is to chemicals like Cloth. Show a pic when you get a chance? Tks

Not my pic, but a good example I had some in a WI blend years ago. It was marketed as drought tolerant. I had read allot of good stuff about this.....so I added some to my planting last fall. Sounds like deer really like it. I may have been a bit too early in adding some delar....given my situation here. I have had to use some chemical (Cleth) to keep some of the grasses under control this year. (only had to use a 1/2 tank of Gly on some thistle so far). Not sure if Delar will handle cleth? I may have seen some of that.....and now I will look for more. Got a wide variety of stuff growing.....and I can identify allot....but I got more to learn about. Delar SB is a spendy seed.....may have to wait a spell before I add more.

Cleth only impacts grasses. Won't do anything to small burnet. Yep, expensive seed for sure. I'm not sure how it fits in your system. Small burnet is a pretty long living perennial forb.

I think it "fits" just fine.....but as much as it costs.....I suppose that I should have planted it by itself into a decent situation. As it was....I put it into a mix with ten other seeds and hoped for the best. It just costs too much to treat it like DER or Rye. I suppose at my age I get a bit impatient and want results....NOW! lol.

I put that small burnet/ WI mix on some of my lightest soils. The small burnet persisted for a few years, but I could never see any sign of browsing.
I think that deer here have other preferred foods, at least at that time of over 20 years ago.

Small burnet was one of the few seeds that grew pretty well on my folks' old place. It never put on anywhere near the biomass that it did on my old place, but anything was better than nothing. On my old place it grew great as part of a clover mix. Deer ate it at both sites.
The only issue I'm having with burnet (and chicory) is weed control. I'm not going to spend the money on those two and then kill it off while attempting to control weeds in clover plots. Allegedly chicory can survive a light dose of Imox, but I'm not going to spend $6+ per lb. to find out.
