Is that a Marlin? What caliber? It's a Winchester Model 94 in 30-30. Not sure how old it is or how long he had it. As long as I can remember it was his deer gun. He seldom shot a deer. He would sit there and watch them as he smoked his Swisher Sweets or Cherry tobacco pipe... content to know he could have shot one. When everyone got together after each hunt to clean/butcher/eat/drink/etc he would sit back and grin at them, and talk trash about the work they made for themselves by shooting a little buck. I have one of his duck calls that still smells like cherry tobacco. Lots of good memories. Just testing you. Grin. The marlins had a side eject and one of the nice things was you could mount a scope over the top. Those 30-30's are a good cartridge for deer.....and that gun would hunt just fine in the woods around our area. LOTS of those used here as deer killing machines.

I thought it was an odd question coming from you Foggy, but I wasn't quite sure if I should call you out on it or not.

Funny this happened today. A friend of mine is *really* in to guns. He has a "gun room", and loads of rifles he's never shot. He just likes them. He's not working right now. I jokingly told him I'd buy one of his rifles I was interested in, "That Remington Sendero you've never even scoped." So, he won't let me buy it. He says, "It's not for sale." I just laughed it off. I wasn't really being serious anyway.
Then he says, "But I'll let you keep it at your place and use it forever. You just have to promise me I can borrow it if I ever make it out West to shoot goats."
Anyway, I'm about to have a rifle that's the opposite of common and sensible. I'm going to have a Sendero II in .264 Win Mag. It's got a 26" barrel, and it's pretty as could be. I realize ammunition is scarce and expensive. I know my .270 does everything I need. But, it'll be fun to shoot and it'll make me smile. I imagine it'll do what it needs to do on a Kooch buck too.
He also said he'd teach me to reload for it. I'm tickled.

^. Pretty fast stepping round that one. Good as a "bean field" rifle. Long ranges. Nice.

Said he had a $450 limit in the first post. Thus the push toward a Henry. Not sure what a Browing would sell for?? I had a Browning BLR in 243 at one time.....and lost a SUPER buck due to a poorly placed shot? or a too small hole??? Dunno....I thought I made a good shot. (you be he judge). I have not been a 243 advocate (for deer) since that time. Maybe just me? Today I like bigger holes in my deer. Still....you could score a nice Savage 99 in 308 for that money....if your lucky. Some of the used stuff is better than the new stuff. To me....any GOOD rifle (new or used) is gonna cost you $400 or more.....it's just a matter of preferences. www.pewpewtactical.com/best-lever-action-guns/I think we are both a bit outdated on not liking the .243 for deer with the new bulletin designs. That being said, I would not let my daughters use them for deer and went for 7.08. I still feel that way and I am not changing my mind. My brother in law is/was a good shot and he list a very nice buck where the bullet blew up on the shoulder at very close range. He suspects he had a varmint reload in there but was never quite sure. You old codgers are too set in your ways. .243 has never let me down.

I’d use a .243 my sons each shot bucks up northern MN with .243 in Kittson County. 3-3 ez kills.

For awhile.

My brother in law said that, too. For awhile. 24 years isn’t enough? I’ve thought about switching but until I have a problem what’s the point.

I know about a guy that had 8 or 9 consecutive one shot kills with a 7.08 and then he started to brag. End of story!

Shot placement is so much more important than caliber.........until you make a somewhat poor placement. Then.....there is no replacement for displacement. (old gear-head talk....but it works for bullet size too).

(old gear-head talk....but it works for bullet size too). Don’t take crappy shots. I hunt in the woods. Longest shot I’ve taken is maybe 100 yards. Most are within 75. Placement is key as with any type of shot, gun or bow.

I know I've said this before on this forum, but my boys have killed several deer with a .223 and it's a devastating round. Deer consistently drop faster than the ones shot with the .308's (and leave better blood trails for some reason). A couple of things with that data though; I don't think they've ever shot at a deer that was further than 30yds away, and they've never hit one outside of the heart and lungs zone.
