Years and years, did the ole bear hug/grunt/"hurry the fuck up"/pull/wrap around tree 1:1 bufoonery. Thinking about getting one of these guys in the event I'm 1 man butchering. How do you guys get your deer in the air? www.amazon.com/dp/B001EV6WZG/ref=emc_b_5_t?th=1

When we used to hang deer we’d tie a rope around it’s neck and then lift them up with a cable winch puller (ratchet) rigged up in the rafters of the garage. Also used a gambrel a few times. The ratchet is much easier than bear hugging and lifting. I’d imagine an electric winch would be even easier.

I cut a stick and put it through the back legs like the thing you posted. Getting them up by yourself is tricky unless you have room to hoist it up with the wheeler. Of coarse that depends on how big they are. Skinning is much easier if you hang them upside down.

I use something like what you linked to. I’ve been a 1 man butcher too long to not have one.
I used to occasionally use a butcher. He had an eye bolt in the floor and an electric hoist. He would start the skinning on the floor, attach the hide to the bolt and pull the skin off as he lifted.

Sunk a couple of telephone poles in the ground. Then mounted a boat trailer winch on the side. If I have more than one deer at a time I have little strands of rope with hooks that I can use to hold the first deer up and then I crank the second deer up.

We use this set up in Iowa. My neighbor down there made it for us $250... 2 deer capacity.

Other than skinning, are there any other reasons to hang from the hind legs instead of the head? I usually use some sort of vehicle to do the skinning from the head down.

Most of the meat can be reached at chest level when you do the actual butchering. I don’t know how you would butcher hanging by the head.

I guess I'm not sure why but I can see what you mean. The only thing I hate about hanging from the legs is when you take the hind quarters off as the last step it is kinda a pain for the second leg.

I sometimes debone the rear while hanging. The front shoulders come off easy. Hanging by the rear puts most of the cutting at face height.

New this year. We'll use a chain hoist. My neighbor asked me if I was expecting to shoot a moose.

The one I posted was a 6:1, that fleet one is 4:1. You have any idea how much a Cass County yearling doe weighs? I'll probably rip the tranny outta the can am.
