My clover is toast (above ground). Part of that is lack of snow. Even with uber high densities its the only thing they cant kill. Birdsfoot trefoil, vetch, chicory, millet, milo even cereal grains are eaten until they are dead and gone. They eliminate foxtail outside my exclusion pens. Clover comes back every year.

First pic is clover that had wheat thrown in it and then mowed. Second pic is unmowed (wheat thrown in also). The mowed section is short! The unmowed has more tonnage for certain but much less wheat. Curious to see how it pans out in January and February.

Was west of the house spraying a few straggler buckthorns and went thru the foodplot. Deer have been digging through 6-10" of snow to get at the clover. They are also bedding out there. Most nights and mornings we see at least 2 deer out there.
Late April/early May to early January now...9 months of attraction and food.

I am anxious for my Tank trees to start cranking out fruit so I have lots of winter food in trees. That Courthouse crab looks really good every time I drive past it too. I think I saw some nice looking scions on that tree, but they were pretty high up.

Clover still providing some calories and it's almost February I wish I could have clover through at least December but, mine all but, disappears late October. I guess from heavy browse. This year was definitely drought related. They ate everything in our plots by November.

With your guy's extreme weather I wonder how many plot species can even survive late winter.

That’s a good idea on the exclusion cages. I think between the deer and bear the clover gets cleaned up quickly after the first frost. I watched two cubs chow down clover for an hour one frosty crunchy morning several years ago. They were like vacuums. It was nice and plush. The next weekend it was gone. So yeah more clover is in the works for next year. I’ve got to try and get into my new area and drop the remaining trees soon before I get tied up with pruning for a month.

Get a bunch of clovers growing and see if that doesn't increase your tonnage. I'd also lime the pi$$ out of your plots.

I’ll try to add another ton of lime this year to my plots.

Woke up and looked towards the clover plot to the west like I do most mornings. 7 deer bedded and 1 standing up. They've been pawing for clover quite a bit lately. If/until we get a bunch more snow, or the snow gets a crust I bet they'll stay with the digging.
