I met a young warden last week on the nearby wildlife area. He is covering his station and two adjacent stations that are vacant. He was concerned about the area between Stu and I and the hunts this weekend. If that's the young guy who is covering L.P. after the last female warden left (not sure if she left of her own accord or what the deal was) he seems like a decent enough guy. The last warden was pretty much worthless. Wouldn't respond to phone calls, wouldn't follow up (I know first hand, she was scheduled to give me a tag so I could possess a road or poacher killed buck I found and she never showed or called) with people. Would disappear for days at a time, etc. etc. etc. Somebody allegedly killing a few deer illegally, but having a legal tag on them is about impossible to deal with. Wardens have much better things to do than deal with that type of situation. Poaching is a huge issue in Todd, Morrison, and OT counties. I met that warden on the ice last winter. Nice guy. This warden was also pleasant, and from the area south of us.

I did not think it was a good idea to have youth season and the early antlerless season on the same dates. Sounds like some party hunting happened. Adults shooting bucks at this time, with rifle or shotgun should be a major offense. But look at how easy they just made it! Dumb

Seems like it to me...and apparently to a lot of other people too.

If they had early anterless on a different weekend as the youth hunt, then the youth could feasibly hunt 2 weekends with gun before the standard rifle season and increase the harvest that much more. Hope the DNR doesnt figure that out!!!!

do they publish youth season harvest numbers?
Edit: Yes the data is available. 5859 harvested during youth season last year. Pretty small percentage.

It irritates me that some adults are poaching bucks during the youth season, but I will say I'm pretty excited for my kids to hunt in the youth season in the future.

Seems standard operating procedure in many areas to bend the rules. Whenever I looked at buck heads in the freezer at thanksgiving I never knew any of the names attached to the skulls.
