You guys keep talking about pumpkins. Some guys say they suck. Some guys love them. I guess every area is different. I think I'll go for it next year just for grins. A double row right up the middle of my place. Some say you need to split the pumpkins with an ax, which then becomes manipulation. I see very little use of pumpkins, but the deer did nibble at a bit of squash this year. Whatever. If I get big orange things out there at least it’ll be interesting to stare at for hours on end.

Can you plant those two rows of pumpkins by hand and then spray round up immediately on the two rows? Pumpkins can take over eventually, but they need to be free from competition the first month.
We planted 2 rows about 200 yards long by hand in a 1/2 hour. Then ran over the whole area with a sprayer and it did pretty well.
I don't think that would work well without spraying though.

I grew a small patch of pumpkins. Probably had 3 dozen ripe by fall. Could have been much better if I didn’t plant a month late. So far I see a little use. I’ve busted a few. The deer have chewed on a few. I wouldn’t consider it to be a serious draw.

That'd be the plan, exactly. If it didn't work I could always plant the regular stuff in the row later in the Summer.

You are up near the arctic circle, so i think a mid June planting would work. I plant on June 1st in se mn.

That makes rational sense to me as well, but it doesn't seem all COs are consistently rational. Animals not being able to access my future pressings as a food source is a waste IMO. I'd also like the added benefit of them shitting out seeds all over the woods so more and more apple seedlings show up. If I could legally dump the pressings in a specific location and then not hunt within "x" distance of them, that would be my preference. My pressings get very little use by any critter . I just dump them where we dump vegetable waste and it is far from where we hunt. Not really an attractant at all. Ya, I know you've stated in the past your pomace doesn't get used. I figure since my deer love brassicas, they'll probably love pomace too. I know in orchard country the pomace is a huge deer attractant.

I figure if it's warm enough for long enough that stuff needs spraying, it's probably warm enough to plant pumpkins. I'll just skip the 2,4d and double up on the gly.

I don´t have the goods to make corn worth it. I can plant it and grow it, but the next spring comes around and I am left with all of that residue. Dealing with the corn and a spring tooth drag just doesn´t work well with corn stocks, lol. I have done okay no-tilling beans into the corn, but that is still a pain too. I need a 4-wheeler flail mower to make it work (cue the SD boner).

Broadcast barley, forage collards, flax, and faba beans and mow it down, all while the ground is frozen. Profit.

I have never split pumpkins. The deer just start gnawing on them. They eat them here at home and up north. Its a bitch keeping the weeds out during growing season though and then trying to keep the deer from starting to gnaw on them too early..... if you want to pick some for H'ween.

They eat them all, including the stems. This load disappeared in 17 days. They ate the melon, the butternut squash, acorn squash, decorative squash, and pumpkins. If I could grow pumpkins within my clover (which I have an idea for this spring), that and barley, would be all I'd grow. Plant 'em.

Where are the photos of deer eating them? They ate them. Camera died. I really wish I could have seen it, cause the truck was heaping full and there wasn't a shred of evidence left other than a lot of deer shit.

We tossed 15 to 20 out after halloween behind the house. You would never know a pumpkin existed if you looked now.
