I’m wanting to plant some round up ready corn or beans next spring. The plot has been in clover for the last 10 years. It’s only about 1-1 1/2 acre plot. I know it’s small but that’s all I have. Which one would you plant??? I’m in west central Illinois. I have the planters for both! Thanks Mark

I’m probably the most ignorant food plotter on this site but I’ll throw out an opinion. Plant corn. Your clover has been putting nitrogen into the soil. Beans will do the same. Plant corn so it can take advantage of the nitrogen

With a plot that small i think you'd have to e-fence it to have any chance at growing anything. With that being said if i was early bow hunting it would be beans and if it was later rifle hunting it would be corn.

I have seen some great locking plots with a corn/ bean blend.

Corn or beans are good. One can be better.

Corn or beans are good. One can be better. Better with??? Exactly. Far from binary.

In se mn I haven't had much luck with small corn plots. The deer eat the cobs when they are tiny and they end up funny shaped at best. Then the coons hit them and not a lot left by the time season starts. I prefer a soybean/brassica rotation.
if you were in clover previously I would plant a blend of dwarf Essex rape, groundhog radishes and purple top turnips in mid-July after amending the soil based on your soil test results.

What are the neighbors planting and when do you plan to hunt? Have you planted brassicas before? I doubt you have any bear issues but, I bet raccoons would love your corn.

On my ground my 1.3 acre corn plot did great and still has tons of food. Beans I would be scared of getting mowed to the ground in that size plot depending on your deer densities.

Do you mow/knock down your corn when hunting season begins??

Do you mow/knock down your corn when hunting season begins?? No. I like the cover and also its technically not legal to that here.

Not according to my CO for our area. She said knocking it down or mowing it was fine. just cant manipulate the corn by moving it around. where it lands is where it stays.
For a bit more clarity, I asked her about mowing shooting lanes. not flattening the entire field.

^^^I was waiting for you to say something BLB.
I know you've said before that your CO approved doing so. There's no way in hell I'd do it and hunt over it without getting something in writing from my CO like you've done.
