Our land is about 10 miles south of Reedsburg. Pretty good hunting down there too I'd imagine. We had river bottom land for years in Juneau Co and just recently bought some in the Sauk Hills. Love the hills! Really good hunting compared to our river bottom Yeah I would put Sauk county right up there with some of the best areas in the US. Its amazing some of the deer that get shot in the area.

Yup, we've got family in that area south of Reedsburg towards Plain/Loganville. They shoot some nice deer and up by us there are some really good ones too. A 192 was shot less than a mile from our place up by Redstone in 2020. I've seen some 150+ just riding around as well.

Does anyone see any issue with planting collards around the 4th of July time frame? This would be my first time planting them. Normally we plant a brassica mix but after reading about them, decided to try them out in 2 food plots. We are located in south central Wisconsin specifically Sauk county. Welcome, there's a ton of knowledge here.

Welcome, there's a ton of knowledge here. I planted collards last year....in late June and again in late August. Those June planted collards had to endure some extreme drought last year.....and looked pretty sketchy when I replanted more plots in late August. Yet....upon getting some much needed rainfall.....those collards snapped back unlike any other brassica I have ever planted. Several on here have had good success with collards last year.....some had pure stands and planted in June.....others planted later. All have had good success. Maybe Tom will chime in here.....but I think you can plant them at any time starting now. FWIW....I learned that the waxy leaves on the collards are quite resistant to a treatment with roundup.....from my August spraying before I re-seeded the new fall crop.

Another Sauk Co guy. Nice. Don't let these Minnesotans push you around. I won't try lol I've been a lurker for awhile and it seems like most like to joke around but everyone has tons of knowledge. Welcome! We need new opinions as our opinions are getting stale.

Welcome! We need new opinions as our opinions are getting stale. I'm sure Art is speaking for himself here. . Grin I could tell you that I keep changing my stories around to keep them interesting. The truth might be that I no longer remember how I used to tell them. Maybe I am now qualified to run for office!

Just a heads up,the Impact Forage Collards that I planted last year started growing again. They are now bolting. Really surprised with the winters that I get up in North Central Wisconsin that the collards did not die off. It is no big deal to me but might matter to others. Forgot to take pictures but they are yellow flowers and looks a lot like rape when it bolts.

Is it possible they could re-seed themselves??

I remember many brassicas surviving winters at my old place. Haven't seen any do that here...but there's a big foodplot of some type of brassica bolting just south of us. We went past it last week and it was starting to bloom. Last night it was a field of yellow. Whatever they were, the deer obviously didn't like them much last fall/winter.

Do we have some native weed that pops up in worked fields and looks like a brassica when it first appears?

Yep, Yellow Rocket. The stuff in the foodplot isn't YR. We went past the plot last fall, it was some sort of planted brassica. I'd guess kale, but that's just a guess.
