My cousin texted me tonight saying the collards I planted on July 3rd are up and growing. I'll have to get a picture next time I'm up at the land. It's amazing what rain and some hot humid weather does to seed.

It's amazing what rain and some hot humid weather does to seed. Last year I planted Collards about the 4th of July. And then we had a two month drought. The collards hung on.....and when the rains finally came....unlike anything else I had planted....those collards flourished and provided a good draw through the deer season. Amazing stuff those collards.

The forage collards I planted this spring are a bust. They’re maybe 4-6”. I will be planting more in my plots next week but, won’t frost seed any more in the spring.

So how much fertilizer are you guys putting down per acre? What are you putting down, urea, 10-10-10 or something else?

This is the first year I’ve grabbed soil tests and I’m glad I did. Turns out my ph is super low in all of my plots. Some plots are ok on p and k and others are very low. Very helpful. I’ll be fertilizing to recommendations but the lime will have to wait. I needs tons. I’ve spread some but it’s not enough for sure.

I haven't fertilized any plots for at least 2 years.
edit..I take that back. We put some triple 10 down on the neighbor's plot last year.

I put 100 pounds of urea down on roughly 3/4 of an acre of collards.

Urea is always a good choice with brassicas.

Last year when I planted my test plot of collards that I planted late in May, I put down 4 forty pound bags of urea and 3 fifty pound bags of triple 19 on 1 acre. By early August they were showing signs of needing some nitrogen.

Wish I knew how to post pictures but deer are definitely hitting the collards. Digging through 6 inches of snow to get them. Both areas i planted had weeds get out of hand, but the collards managed to keep growing and put out a good amount of tonnage. I will say that the collards have stayed green compared to the brassicas I planted right next to them. I will for sure be planting collards again next year.

On my aging old phone, I scroll down to the bottom right and click Desktop. Then I can post pictures from my phone. Upload images, and then can post.

Anybody with any pics of their forage collards, are the deer digging through the snow to get to them?
I'm hopeful with the snow that mine are getting some use. In areas I did have collards that were taller than 24".
