I'd be doing whatever I could to get that ground ready for beans and corn.
I'm a throw and mow/spray and pray kinda guy, but I'm not dealing with 10 acres of plots.

I'd be doing whatever I could to get that ground ready for beans and corn. I'm a throw and mow/spray and pray kinda guy, but I'm not dealing with 10 acres of plots. I do have some clover trails established and some small plots that I seeded into winter rye last year. Also have allot of bud available to the deer. I think I need to take a longer view on this.....given the amount of work that needs to be done. It would be easy to just seed some rye or oats....but the land really will need more in the time to come. First I am going to get some of the remaining trash cleaned up......and disk the new plot ground and get the ruts leveled up. Then I need to get a load of ag-lime appled......and I likely will add some nitrogen to speed up the decomposition of some of the slash now mixed in with my soils. Likely I will follow with rye and oats mix in places.....and maybe some buckwheat in other places - just to try different things. I have enough existing good soils to plant some soybeans in late may or early June. I don't plan to do any corn - especially this year. Likely will get some red and white clovers established on some new trails as they become cleaned. May will be a busy month......then there is golf and fishing. FORE! OH....AND I gotta get over to Stu's to pick up that fence next week. Looking forward to that trip.

One kid graduating from SCSU, one kid having a party, then we're heading to NOLA for a few days. You'd be welcome to come pick the fence up if you want. I think it's in a pretty easy to access spot, I could "flag" it for you if you want.

It's not the top priority right now.

Been busting my butt at my land. After getting the forestry unit to clear more plot-land.....I have been picking up sticks, logs, and doing lots of seat time with my tractor. I made a 100 yard and a 200 yard backstop for my rifle range. (gonna be pretty slick!) And.....I have worked up about 7 new acres of land. Disked twice, dragged, sticks removed, more sticks removed......and re-dragged. Also, used my landscape rake and my grapple to re-claim all the old trails I had on my land. Those trails have served as food plots and shooting lanes. My wife helped me for a few hours today......and I put about 10 hours in the tractor and UTV seats. I musta had an inch of dirt on me. This old body is pretty damn tired out tonight. I think one more day like this.....and I will have most of my land ready for planting. However......I am waiting on my soil tests to decide if I want to buy lime and go at it this year.....or perhaps enjoy life and make it wait a year? I got some golf to play.....and some fish to catch. FORE!

Have you decided on what your putting in yet?
I really like buckwheat for building soil.

Have you decided on what your putting in yet? I really like buckwheat for building soil. Yep....if I can get some buckwheat for a fair price I will plant some of that.....especially on the ground that has lots of wood chips. That ground is going to take a year or three to decompose some of the chips and slash left by the sawing and delimiting operations. One thing about buckwheat is that it seems to me to draw insects faster than any other crop. Thus it would be good to help compost the chips. Also going to plant a couple of acres of soybeans, quite a bit of rye, and some clover for now. In July I will determine where to plant my DER, GHR, PTT, and peas. Maybe more rye in fall too. I'm hoping my land becomes a food destination for the neighborhood. Kinda like Feed MY Starving Deer.

Tom- I was thinking about your situation and what could we expect if you would plant some rye now?
Would you get the weed suppression and would it remain tender for deer feed for a period? I forget the term, but doesn't rye need some cold treatment to head out?

Or--plant some oats now. I have seen or heard of deer using soft seed heads and also eating regrowth later on.

Today I dragged and de-trashed about 4 more acres.......and a shooting lane. The damn sticks just keep coming up the more I go over the land. Kinda like rocks.....seem endless. I'm waiting on soil test results to see if I should lime this ground. Or......I may just plant some stuff and make lime wait for next year. I'm trying to get too much done......and it's giving me a bad attitude. I need to go fishing and play some golf. My boat dealer let me down.......and didnt get my depth finder installed as he promised. I missed last fall due to making a trade with him......and now I am missing this Spring.....because he failed to order the (very popular) depth finder. It came in yesterday.....and then his shop staff quit. I wish I would have bought from another dealer. This guy has now officially pissed-me off. GRRRRR

We should go halves on a brush disc and sell it when we are finished. I know where one is at by Foley.

We should go halves on a brush disc and sell it when we are finished. I know where one is at by Foley. NOW you come up with a brush disk idea? I am about done with any land clearing. Maybe one more hard day of picking up trash and sticks. I think I have made from three to four passes over the best acres......and it is looking pretty good at this point. I am pretty sure I could run my JD soybean planter on these plots now. Still.....I got some land that is full of chips and slash......and that land will take a couple of years to compost to decent dirt. It was a bumpy, and super dirty ride on my tractor for many hours.......but I do have some pretty reasonable dirt at this point. Pics to follow via my cell-phone.

Look good! I would think in a couple years there will be no sign of chips and with your regen your place will be quite the draw.
