I had a contact with my forester/friend, whom asked me if I was interested in having a few acres cleared of their stumps after I had my property logged this winter. He know of a guy who is considering the rental of a Vermeer forestry muncher. Evidently they only rent them by the week, and the rental fee is quite steep I have seen a similar machine in operation when they cleared the land for the new highway 371 near Brainerd. Awesome equipment
The forester claims the cost per acre would be about $350 for my pine srumps and that would take the stumps to a few inches below the surface....good enough to pull a disk over.
I am considering doing this to a few acres. I think the guy is looking for more work for the machine in the brainerd area. Not sure how far he would travel or how real this may be.....but it sounds of interest. Anyone near Brainerd with a need? No Gaya tees....but I would ask or set up connection for a big enough need. Thoughts?

If I was in that area and had a bunch of softwood stumps, I'd sure do it for $350 an acre.

I'm not certain how much work I have to do.....but it would be nice to have a east perimeter trail / road and enlarge and shape a few food plots. I may have 3 or 4 acres to do. I bet that my work would not take a 1/2 day.....but would be $1000 well spent. Hmmmm......If I could have a 5 acre field full of corn and soybeans in the middle of my new woods on my best ground........yowser! It would save me from rebuilding my stump grinder and allot of seat time. (then too...My neck and body don't hold up too well when stump grinding.)

I just sent an email back to my Forester......and told him I was in for a little work with this machine. He is going to check on any cost sharing info as well. Hell......I think I may just grow an apple orchard too! I could get some advice from the guy with the commercial orchard up the road (or you guys seem to know what your talking about too.....grin). I think I could fence in a 1/2 acre or so and do one large orchard. Maybe I will become an apple groupie in my old age? Mostly I just disregard the apple talk......as I have not wanted to do the work due to my land limitations.

^ Just off the phone with my Forester. It does sound like the guy with the machine could use another land-owner or two to clear some forest of stumpage. It sounds like he is going to trial a new machine from Vermeer for a weeks time......and is a day or two short of work. If anyone else is interested and somewhat close to the Brainerd area......I would connect you. It sounds like $350 an acre is the going rate (??) I suppose lots depends on what needs doing. It sounds like they can even mulch up my piles of stacked wood and reduce em to shreds. May use some of this for swamp crossing?? Hmmm. Still got that chain link fence Stu? It sounds like there may be some cost share money on such a project. More to come. I do wish I could spend some time on my land to make a plan. One bad thing about being "stuck" here in OZ for a a few more weeks. Still, I will be back before the ground thaws out. FORE!

Sounds like you guys might have it done. If by chance he has any open time and would be willing to drive to my area I could use a couple kill plots made as well as trails to them.
My stuff is pretty ugly, combo of blow-down and small trees.

You can always talk.....keep an eye on your email.
