Yeah....that planter required a little TLC and most of the depth control. parts were missing. It's hard to bring a unit like that up to speed when you don't know what is missing. But it works fine with beans now. After I got my nose into the owners manual a bit.....it became more clear on how it works. I was pleasantly surprised on how well the planter worked in some relatively high wood trash. It even just walked up and over stumps when I was planting. I ran pretty slow ground speeds in the trashy area.....only planting at about 2.5 MPH (cruise control is nice).....where I usally can plant at 3.5 or a bit faster. I just don't want to break stuff. I tried to get the right parts and plates to plant some sugar beet seed last year....but never really got that done. I think I have given up on planting sugar beets ever again. Too much work and expense for me. That planter proved to be a little more challenging that I had hoped......but the result is good now. I may replace more parts later this year. I'm sure those units planted allot of acres.....and some of the parts are quite worn. The paint was sure better than some of the parts. Often enough, that's just the way used stuff is.

You and the boss have done tons of work.

Planted another acre of beans today......and another bag of rye and a bag of buckwheat. I think I am about done for now.......likely will not plant more until after the 4th. Things are really greening up with the recent rains and warmer (??) weather on the way. Only 50 degrees as I write this.
Dug up a row on my beans.....and the seeds are all swollen and ready to sprout soon. COM'MON SUN!!!

Planted a few rows of beans into some pretty thick wood slash and sticks that remain from the logging and mulching. I'm not too sure this ground is ready for beans......so I held back and just planted 4 rows in this stuff. The planter worked fine.....but I think this is gonna dry out fast (?) and needs to compost a year or two. I did plant some buckwheat in it too......and we will see which crops grow in this stuff. I didnt do anything to pack the buckwheat seed into this stuff. I hope it will "take". Does buckwheat need packing or soil covering the seeds? (IIRC it germinates quite easilly ??)

A good tack driving rain makes us all look good in those kinds of situations.

Looks good Tom. What's with the Binder covers on a JD planter?

Tom- have you tried any medium red clover in the new ground? I just planted a blend of medium red, ladino, and some alice white on the new trails leading into my food plots. I put down some rye on my new trails first....then dragged the trails....then followed with the clover blend. No packing after the clover blend. Had an inch of rain after planting....should be golden. I might have about an acre worth of trails we seeded. Also sowed about 2 acres of buckwheat on new ground that is full of woody trash / slash from logging. That stuff has gotta compost down a bit before I can plant in it. I did put about 100 lbs /acre of nitrogen on this ground to get it to compost quicker. We need to spend some time picking sticks and logs out of this ground before its going to amount to a good food plot. The dirt seems OK...but its fllled with woody trash right now.

Looks good Tom. What's with the Binder covers on a JD planter? That's the way it came to me. They fit well and do the job. I think the 71 unit planters were also branded by IH for a few years(??). (can't remember) Yetter now makes the 71 planter units.....and has parts for them.
